November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

So excited to start my next hatch.  Waiting on my new thermometer/hygrometer and egg candler light so I can run my bator for a while again and see if maybe my temps or humidity were off.  I found someone locally whose hens are still laying strong and she is going to bring me a dozen eggs from her girls.  From these I have the chance to get:
                                                                                                   White leg horn
                                                                                                   Rhode island reds
                                                                                                  New Hampshire red
                                                                                                    Barred Rock
                                                                                                  Buff Orpington
                                                                                                 English Blue Orpington
                                                                                                English Black Orpington
                                                                                                Austrolorpe
                                                                                               Americauna
                                                                                                 Golden comet
                                                                                              Welsummer
                                                                                               Silver laced Wyandotte
                                                                                                 Buff Brahma
Out of those the only I have now is RIR and one white leg horn and a few Americauna, so I'm very excited to see what we get!
That is awesome - it so nice when you find a local breeder!!!!

He wants $20 per sexed lavender orpington chick. Would you say that's overpriced?

Laying hens here in washington usually go for $20/25 for regular breeds already laying and 35 ish for silkies and such. Chicks though usually dont go more than $8 depending on breed and most around $5. If its just a baby chick for 20 that is way overpriced.

No, its not "just a baby chick". It's a rare breed "imported" baby chick - which can be anywhere from $20 - $2500 per chick. Take a gander ;) http://greenfirefarms.com/store/ Be prepared to catch your jaw like I did the first time I started looking, LOL :D

That is the sales price. I believe his are English imports, I know most of his birds are show quality lines. I did a quick search and it looks like typical price is $40 per chick http://www.naturalark.com/poultryforsale.html The Lavender Leghorns I got for $25 ($30 sexed) normally go for $175 ($180 sexed) per day old chick or $1000 per juvenile pair :D Its actually a heck of a deal!

That's what I thought. Given that they are English, and from show lines, I think it's worth it. But I have to convince hubby! I said I wanted them for my Christmas present! :fl

Im so happy !

The little bugger pulled thru and it was hanging in the incubator this morning! I set up its brooder let the temp get nice and warm added water and feed and in it went !

So now we need a good Halloween name for it !

So cute. Pumpkin is a Halloweenish name.

Yes I did turn a sports sock into a chicken diaper/overalls. Every time I take the lid of his brooder this one flies out for a look around. I got tired of getting pooped on, LOL! Thanks for the idea Max

LOL! This is one of my CCL x GLW 2 week olds. He's the only one that seems to have gotten a straight comb.

Max is always happy to help. If only I had a really big sock.
Here are my 5 silkie babies
I have never seen chicks like that. They are very pretty. What kind are they?

They are silkies born from white & buff silkie hens and a porcelain silkie roo. One I kept from the last batch is turning out to look like its porc daddy. Here he is with his daddy and his by himself. I love the porcelain color in silkies.

wow, $20 per chick! I have been eyeballing a craigslist ad (I'm always cruising for fertile eggs. shuddup!) about 100 miles away, $3/egg for lavender English Orps. I'm starting to wonder if that's a bargain? after shipped eggs I'm willing to drive next time..

what does the "English" part of lavender Orpington differentiate from a regular lavender Orpington?

from the ad, are they english? ;)

I can't believe I'm already planning the next hatch...
