I finally have some quail. I have 4 babies so far. I am not convinced there will be anymore. I have a few pips no zips yet. Look how little they are. They are the cutest things I think I have ever seen in the bird world. I have yet to see a baby duckling. Soon. I think the 20th of this month. I have 7 more quail eggs in the incubator and had to toss 3. They did not develop. I have Chicken eggs that will hatch tomorrow or the next day. I have put dividers in the brooder. I am not sure they will all get along. The first quail chick picks on the new ones. Here is a picture of the four of them. The one in the back is the last one out of the incubator. The quarter is for reference.

I have a few different breeds this time in my bator, but most are from my flocks eggs. Two are from a local farm which will look nothing like mine since they are Brahma mix.

I'm down to only 2 local eggs out of 5... Honestly I'm probably not going to try their eggs again. I was thinking about getting a dozen, but the only eggs I've pulled from the bator is theirs not mine

Congrats on the babies! Quail are beyond adorable. I have never seen a baby quail in person, they’re SO tiny.

They're so tiny! I have seen them at our local farm a few times, but never purchased them because you have to buy 50. They order from a hatchery and that's the hatcheries minimum I guess.

11 Silkie eggs looking good when I moved them over to the hatcher last night! I put them in the incubator late on a Friday, so I'm not really expecting anything until Saturday. I am a little concerned that one never really developed a larger air sack, but it had good movement when I candled, so fingers crossed!

Of the dozen I purchased last week, only six are developing. I'm a bit disappointed that the fertility rate wasn't higher since they were driven and not shipped, but oh well!

I’m beginning to think that fertility of eggs is more related to their freshness. It seems pretty hard to displace a day old air cell, but easy on a larger air cell, even taking all the precautions.

I’m starting to ask for only day old hatching eggs and seeing much better success.

I think in this case I believe it had more to do with the sheer fluffiness of a quality Silkie's butt, and part a not making it to part b in the first place....

If the air cells are just spots I don't think any chicks will hatch, you can try with dry hatch so they lose more weight. But I wouldn't give a firm advice without seeing..

By spot on I meant that they seemed exactly how they were supposed to be. I candled for day 14 two days ago but I forgot to take pictures again.. I had to throw out an egg yesterday because it was starting to smell and I don't think it was fertilized, never saw development. So I am down to 9 eggs, two that I am not too confident about. Still better than I was expecting though!

When you're weighing eggs, its always about the average, not the individual eggs, which can really be all over the place.

It's kind of the same with air cells, it's more the average of how do all the eggs look, versus specifics. Fingers crossed for a really great hatch!

Uh, quick question: has anyone here dropped an egg while candling (day 5), cracked the shell, but not the membrane, and had it survive?

I have heard of people fixing cracks with candle wax, but I'm fresh out of that, so my horse-show brain took over and I taped the crack with electrical tape. My biggest concern is that the air-sack doubled in size, so I have the egg sitting upright on the center of the turner so it won't roll.
