November Hatch-a-long...

Day 10 for the paint Silkie eggs. 3 developed. 1 looks great. Strong veining and movement. 1 looks okay. Veining and movement isn’t quite as strong, but not bad. And 1 looks eh. Veining isn’t as good as the others, and pretty weak movement.

Well we had some chaos here and did not get duck coop area extended as soon as hoped so that I could get last months “babies”, 17 chicks, out to the new coop brooder area. So I did as suggested and YUP!, my 7 older gals were in shock at 17 new roommates and didn’t bother them not one bit! Now to finish the duck expansion so this months 15 ducklings can go out in a few weeks.

I left the only duck from last month’s hatch (5 weeks) in the mudroom brooder and added the 15 ducklings from a week ago in with her. I think she (he) is in love lol. She is a pretty attentive 5 week old mama lmao
Baby ducks are so adorable, that’s so cute the five week old fits right in.

Fingers crossed for the weak ones. Maybe it’s the shell? :fl:fl

I’ve got draw down on my one egg due Wednesday!

I just moved it from the incubator to the little giant hatcher. It’s so hard to control those styrofoam incubators. This is the first time I’ll be using it before a pip. Normally I just use it as a backup/ICU space where I put an egg that has pipped already. I’ve found that if I keep the temperature closer to 99 than 100, it stays a lot more stable. That of course correlated to 94.4 degrees on the incubator therMostar. Eye. Roll. :fl:fl

After posting pics the other day, I candled the good egg one more time. The top of the egg pushed in under the light. Turns out the top of the egg was a bit soft, and I didn’t catch it during the first Candling. Ugh. :he

So.. I put wax on the part that broke. I don’t know how well the membranes survived. I’m thinking there are worse places for cracks, but it is still not good. It was the best embryo of the 3, so I’m just sick about it. Will see if it survived on day 18 next week. :fl

Any idea what would cause the top to be soft or thin? (Not sure which) I’ve never run into this before! I didn’t put anymore pressure on it than normal when candling.

So another chick hatched, making six, but it is is crossed beaked and only has one eye. It is not being bullied by any of the other five chicks in the brooder. Does anybody have any suggestions for what to do with it. If it can eat and drink on its own we are definitely keeping it but I don’t know what to do if it can’t. We haven’t tried feeding it but that’s because it just hatched last night

I hatched out only 1 Cochin bantams out of an eBay order last month. It was cross beaked and had one eye! I let the seller know but they didn't respond. What kind of chick was it? I've been incubating for over 10 years and have never seen that before!
