Our first time setting eggs, although our flock has been laying like crazy since August, 2009.
Sprung for a HovaBator 1602N w/ auto-turner (super cheap); added a fan. Put eggs in the bator straight from the nesting boxes:
12 on 10/27
9 on 10/28
8 on 10/29
Staggered dates as we only loaded up portions of each day's egg production (we sell 'em, and folks get cranky if we're sold out). Hopefully this doesn't cause too much of a problem. Don't have a bona-fide candler thing, and our homemade candler isn't the best. We were getting VERY bummed because we couldn't see any development, although tonight...woo hoo!
DEFINITE veins and such in at least three of the first 12! Must have helped in that we candled at night with all the lights off!
Whatever hatches will most likely be of the "mutt" variety: Roos are a Black Polish and an Australorp. Hens are Australorp, Barred Rock, RIR, Red Star, Faverolle, Light Brahma and Turken. Might luck out and get a pure Australorp, but a crested turken would be very cool!
Can't wait for 11/17!
