NY chicken lover!!!!

Hello All and All Newbies!
Been a couple days since I've posted, it's been a whirlwind over here. So much going on with family, and now DH sprung some news on me tonight while he was traveling to Albany that I swear I could strangle him for cuz now I'm left here alone with the kids all upset. But I figure since this is the NY thread and we have people from all over NY on this thread then maybe you all could help lift my spirits on this situation.

My husband works in the restaurant business and his company is growing and growing. In the past 5 years we've moved from CT to Albany, from Albany to Syracuse and now he's talking by next year moving up again in his position which means another move for our family. He told his boss he will not move any further away from CT than we are now. ALL of our family and friends are from CT and I like to travel there often especially since both sets of grandparents are there. We were JUST talking last night about eventually purchasing up here where we are now because I LOVE it SO MUCH! I tell him every day (not tomorrow but in the next 5-10years) how I want to build our next house and I want to build a barn I want to be in farm country so I can own whatever animal it is I want - a horse or two, goats, pigs etc and of course chickens (can't leave them out). I just love the idea of it all. Then he springs this move on me. This next position would require him to do a lot of traveling between NYC, Stamford, CT and possibly Albany. So my question for all of you is, IF we accept this and come to terms that we would have to move and I wanted to stay in NY, does anyone know of a good central location to all those cities that is like what I have here in Tully (farm country) that also has good schools as well? I am just so upset over all this and wish I never had to leave here. I thought we'd be here at LEAST 5 years before another talk of a move came up.

Greene County would fit the bill....however you don't say if he is going to have a "home base". If it were me, I would want my home to be near my "home base". Once that has been determined then we can all pitch our best line for the area you are moving to. (or someplace close)

No home base, he'll be traveling week by week among the 3 locations but probably more so between NYC and Stamford.

Green county is nice. So is Schoharie county. I'm just outside Schoharie county.. I would want to be on higher elevation in Schoharie county tho. Like Middleburg. .. Huntersland ... Or Howes cave..

The thought of moving again just turns my stomach. So this is all appreciated. I'd rather hear from people who have been living in NY most of their life than to do this research on google and try to find a place on my own.

I am in Voorheesville. 10 minutes from Albany and Schenectady. Small school (100 kids per grade) 20-23 per class. Excellent reputation. I have a child in high school, middle school and elemenatary and I work there too. Property is very nice, typically rolling hills/edge of Helderberg Mountains. Great drainage and fertile soils. Rocky though.

pharm- crocheting is fun. its nice to be able to sit and have your hands busy.

Yesterday we got a heaped basket of eggs and today I go out and get 5. Hopefully they are just dawdling and layed later in the day. DH will check when he gets home.

If you two crochet how come you haven't joined any of the Granny Square swaps? I applied for job at Joannes nearby. Not sure I made a good impression on the woman who I suspect might bt the manager.

I could really use the job. Even if it's part time and doesn't pay much. I suspect the minimum wage will be going up sometime in the future.

Have to ask. What is CT? Sorry you have to move again, but it's for his career, what can you do?

I grew up without my father because he joined the military and my mother refused to leave Syracuse to follow him. Not sure what my life would have been like had she done so. I'm fairly certain I'd have ended up in a warmer climate.

I grew up in Liverpool. It used to be farm country. Then all the building started, farms turned into tract housing and the cows moved on. To bad it was perfect for farming. Moved to the city and hated every minute of it.

You gotta get Mother Earth news and read up on homesteading. Might take you to another state but you might like it. If he does. Buy lots of land.

I live in Eastern Columbia county. 5 miles from Berkshire county Mass. Sharon CT is 40 minutes from us. I don't know where in CT your family is. We go to Manchester once or twice a year and that is a 2 hour drive. Hartford about 1.5 hours.
Our area is beautiful old farm country. 50 years ago there were 5 large chicken farms I know of within 5 miles of our house. 2 within 2 miles. Still some working small dairy farms. Lots of countryside. Hills, woods, fields, just nice. 35 minute ride to Albany. 20 minute ride to Pittsfield Mass. 10 minutes to Stockbridge Mass. Tanglewood is close if your into that kind of thing. My family moved to our property in 66. I'll probably die on the same land
