NY chicken lover!!!!

Lynzi,

love the baby bunny pics. They are absolutely precious!!

I have a lot of posts to read, but it's nice to check in after a weekend off line.

My little ones have been getting more and more time mixing with the big girls. Some times it seems to be going well, but then one of the big ones will just hammer one of the youngsters and I mean HARD. Today, the Del whacked the Brabanter hard enough to send a few of her feathers flying. Not too keen on that. The little ones get scared, too, and run over to my feet. They do not seem to enjoy being around the bigger girls. The best behaved of the big girls is definitely Helen, the Maran. That was a little surprising at first, but I guess as Boss Lady, she is not threatened by the "Littles."

Anyone else have homebody chickens? They go out for a min but then when ever i check on them they are back inside the coop with the roo crowing away for them in there. Today i chased them all out and closed the door for a bit. The light sussex i have doesnt know how to use the ramp to get out of the coop it litterly takes her like 15 min to get out of the coop. She debates on jumping off the step or not. Some times i have to pick her up and set her down outside. They use the man door to get in and out as of now.

Is something scareing them ? How old is your roo ? is he scaring them ?

Rancher thanks am glad it’s doing good I actually was so afraid to have it done after the Dr. said it will be the worst pain you ever felt and the Dr. said he is surprised that I can move it and am not in pain says I should be.

Miquwid I think that is a pole bean but not sure with the spots are those paint or does the plant actually have white spots?

Breella Looks good to me very nice.

Jlawson I have home body chicks too who I have to shove out and close the door and I also have a splash Maran Hen who takes forever on the ramp going down now coming up she is a pro but she is also one of the home bodies too.

Lynzi I am so sorry the eggs didn’t work out you will have to try again.

Cracrzy4chicks I love your Bantam Cochins they look like big fluffy puffballs

Stony- Congrats on the new quackers

Tab good luck with the eggs

can you show us what it looks like ? Where in Walmart did you find it ?
I picked one up sunday for my bator. At my walmart they are by the paint/houseing/house tools area. If you see outside thermometers your in the correct spot. This is a link to the one i bought. http://www.walmart.com/ip/AcuRite-Digital-Humidity-and-Temperature-Monitor/16888914
I also have one of these in there http://www.walmart.com/ip/AcuRite-8-Thermometer-with-Humidity/16888915?findingMethod=rr. analog instead of digital. Along with my http://www.petmountain.com/product/...-513304/terrarium-hygrometer-thermometer.html. Thats on top of the one my bator comes with lol. Every single one reads alittle differnt then again they are spaced alittle apart but i tryed stacking them and they read a little differnt i need to calabrate them after this trial hatch.

For those that don't know (and i didnt untill this weekend) the part mesureing humidity is a hygrometer. dont be trying to google hydrometer like i was it wont be the same thing at all.

We have lots of Amish living by us and my husband plows them out in the winter so for him doing that they are building me a barn out of rough cut using our trees. Well Saturday the husband was telling them about the duck eggs I have in the incubator and how he wants ducks. I go out this morning to go to therapy and one of the little Amish boys comes up and hands me a box and says this is from my parents so I am thinking it is baked goods as they are always dropping off baked goods so I take it indoors to set it on the counter and notice it is making noise and inside is 8 baby ducks that are 2 weeks old.

What I want to know from anyone that has ducks is how do you keep them dry? I put them in a tote with wood chips and gave them a quart chick waterer well I got back to them standing in soggy soaked wood chips and an empty waterer so I decide to put in a bowl and they start hoping init. I then put in a small bowl but they still are hopping in it how is beyond me cause it is a small square bowl. So what am I doing wrong?

I read that if you give them chick starter you have to give them Brewers Yeast for the Niacin which is fine but where do you get the brewers Yeast are you ordering it or are you getting it in a store some where

Hi , what a nice gift ..Glad to hear you are doing so well .
google duck waterer ..someone made one out of a milk jug I think
If they have open water they want to swim in it ...

Nutty-Nice ducks. It's almost impossible to keep ducks dry. My duck pen when I move them inside for the winter is horrendous. With your little waterer you could try putting it on something to raise it up a little or even put a bucket lid with a lip under it to buffer the shavings from it.

I think I might have found one it is a 2 liter soda bottle turned on its side with a small section cut out then the duck can't get in the bottle but can still get water. Figure I will use some tubing on the edges if it is sharp. I just don't want them to be in the soggy wet getting chilled they are too little yet. They are actually adorable and I do hope my eggs do hatch and I have more of them . We have already done a pond so will start on the duck house for them.

Nutty here is some info on niacin. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/349920/niacin-for-ducks it's old but should still be good i would think. Some are talking about buying capsules in the drug store then disolving them in water. Another person writes stinking nettle is high in niacin so you can make a tea out of it.

Also i hear not to give ducks medicated chick starter. I have no idea what it does i just remember reading it awhile ago when i thought of ducks instead of chickens.

hope it helps.
