NY chicken lover!!!!

My chickens think that worms fall from the sky. I spent a lot of today picking up worms and dropping them into the chicken run. Now they look UP when they hear my voice. LOL Silly chickens.

They also only laid ONE egg again today. What's with that? I feed them all the treats they can eat. Maybe they need to eat some real chicken food. Wait. Worms ARE real chicken food.

Everything in the coop is done and they chickens are making happy sounds. All is good in my world. Hope you can say the same.

One set of chickens out and back in for the day, second set of chickens out for the day now. Sammy my Bantam Mottled Black Cochin - well what can I say???? I pretty much have to just call him and he heads for the coop calling the girls. Sea goes in then usually Sammy Sophie on the other hand has to go and be "herded" to get her near the coop - then she'll just pace outside the gate since she thinks we're going to catch her - silly girl I only stand near the gate to keep the babies from getting out since they think they should come out too!

Windy here to but not as much as yesterday and no snow since this morning - trying to clear up and we keep getting peaks of Sun. Yay, more to do in the yard tomorrow if hubby doesn't have OT.

He's going to kill me by the way so I hope someone has some spare room

Is there anything stronger than tinfoil out there?????

Visited a nearby farm and was given 3 EE hatching eggs.

Brought them home and gave them to Doris. She was brooding today's egg and growled at me. I slipped the three eggs under her and then took hers. She was still on the nest when I left.

Hoping and Praying all goes well.

Happy Country Hens.

Fyrekitten - Congrats on your Murray McMurray order. When are yours coming in? Mine will be here on the week of June 7th.

DH was up till 3:30 am pumping the backyard into the frontyard so our basement didnt flood. Wow did we get some rain!!! The brooder box was right next to where he had the pump but the babies handled the noise okay. Speaking of babies, I gave them some finely chopped grapes and yogurt yesterday and the happy cheeping went on and on! Silly silkie babies love the goodies! My big girls werent left out. They got leftover chicken and rice along with grapes. Of course the grapes went first, followed by the meat and then rice. They have priorities you know! Very windy here today.

I am hoping the weather is nice this week so I can reseed my lawn. The girls have torn it up some so now I get to repair it and reseed it. Will have to go to Lowes and get some plastic fencing and posts so I can make a moveable freerange area and keep them off my newly seeded areas. DH has been busy dropping pine trees so we can get more sunlight on the property and so he has space to build me a permanent coop next spring for my javas. He is sawing the pine trees into slabwood to use for this project. I am so excited.

Rancher--I read your post on silkies to him and he agrees (grrr). Silkies arent sissys. He laughs at my silkie babies. I think they are cute. My big girls just give them the stinkeye. I told them to mind their manners as the roasting pan was unoccupied at the moment. They ran off to look for bugs.

Congrats on all the new babies everyone is hatching! I would love to hatch more but dh would kill me. I really want silver pencilled bantam rocks. Gotta stop looking!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello everyone! I've really enjoyed reading some of your recent posts. My boyfriend and I are newbies to chicken farming. So far we have just purchased a coop and fencing materials. For a little background information, we live in Saratoga County on an acre of land right across the street from the Hudson River. Our family includes 3 english bulldogs, 5 rescue cats, and a spunky 8 year old boy.

We have a raised vegetable garden in the backyard which was our main project last Spring/Summer. We enjoyed gardening so much we created a hydroponic system in a room in our basement! If you're interested, we have a blog documenting its progress at blogponics.com

Our next project is to leap into the world of chicken farming. Are certain breeds recommended for new owners? Is it best to buy them as chicks, or is it possible to purchase mature hens? What's the best chicken feed?

We're super excited and would really appreciate any advice you may have. Thanks so much!

Welcome to BYC! You are going to get all sorts of opinions on what the best chickens are. I personally am after a colorful egg basket, so Marans, Ameraucanas, Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers and Orpingtons are my favorites. You can't go wrong with Silkies for pure entertainment value! And all of them have great personalities and are friendly to me and my family. I also think you would enjoy the process of starting with chicks. We use feed from our Blue Seal feed mill behind our house...medicated for chicks, layer for the layers.

Probably chicks, My incubator is full each week with my own eggs....gotta hatch those dark eggs!

Isn't she cure, she looks like an angel, but is more like a little devil!
