NY chicken lover!!!!

I have my first broody duck!

We had already taken out the eggs this morning so I have her the oldest eggs that I had set aside for hatching (May 9th and 10th). I am shocked at the nest she made. I didn't know ducks made such great nests. This dog house was a big mess of hat and shavings and she managed to take all the hay, move it to the front corner, make a little "pot" type hole in the middle, and leave all the shavings behind.
How's about that! Pretty cool.

My DH is taking me to new paltz to dinner at my fav rest. then the chance theater to see one of my fav bands for my birthday :) I'm so excited!!! AND chickenstock in 2 days I'm so excited I can't stand it :)

They do make good nests! I had to help my broody welshie out a little by giving her hay after she went broody because there wasn't any for her to use on the ground where they had made their nest to lay in. I should take a picture - she blends right in and disappears onto her eggs.

She doesn't seem to want to spend a whole lot of time on the nest but it IS only day 1. Maybe she's getting her nest ready and is going to lay and lay and THEN sit on them? She's been off the nest three times already since this morning.

Mine pops up when she hears me coming to feed them or hears me refilling the pool for a quick swim but other than that she's glued to the nest. Perhaps your girl is just preparing and plans to lay a clutch in the nest before sitting? What breed is your broody? My welshies always make the nest, lay eggs, then sit.

I have been searching craigslist for a coop or shed I could covert and just can't believe how many people are selling chickens on craigslist. Who knew?

I think I am obsessed with my chickies...last night I woke up in the middle of the night and went to check on them just to make sure they are ok....
