NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning Everyone!
Figured I'd pop on here and mark my spot before the holidays. Been busy around here...I've actually been house hunting. Went to look at house Monday, beautiful antique colonial with a huge 2-3 story barn and 3 acres!! The house needs some updating but there is nothing major wrong with it keeping someone from moving in. The floors are the worst of it - everything else is cosmetic stuff that we could do on our own over time. The floors are the original wood floors so they would need to be fixed in some spots. The barn just had $60K worth of renovations done to it and it already has a fenced in "pasture" attached to it because the people living there had goats!!! Everything about this property is just beautiful and it would be miracle if we got it. DH hasn't seen it yet and I'm sure he'd have his 2 cents to put it but thats just because we are so different when it comes to houses - he likes modern/contemporary and I'm more country/farmhouse.

Anyway, hope everyone's chickens are doing well in the snow you guys got. We've been getting nothing but 40-50 degree weather down here and RAIN! Lots and lots and lot of rain! My driveway is an absolute mudpit and I can't even take Jagger outside to let him run around in yard because I now have my own pod back there. It's just disgusting. I really can't stand living in this house anymore. So we settle for walks around the lake when it is nice out.

I got three new english orpington pullets this last weekend. A woman down the road from me is battling cancer and she decided to rehome her 6 hens, 3 of which were english orps that I have been trying to get from the breeder across main road I live off. Every time I contacted him he either didn't have anything available or didn't both responding at all. And now look, I have three pullets that came from him and I didn't pay a dime! Crazy So I took her orps and someone else took the other three that were marans and auracanas. Oh! And one of them is a SPLASH! I've been wanting a splash hen for quite some time now, so happy to have finally found one!

Silkie eggs are in the incubator, tomorrow is lockdown for eggs 1 & 2 and they each will follow after that into the hatching bator from then until the New Year. So day by day I should have chicks hatching. LOL

Hope everyone is doing well and if I don't get back on here...Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year!

hey Lynzi - if you're interested. I have American Orpingtons and would be willing to ship you some eggs to hatch. They are BBWS and you might just land yourself a rooster or 2 that you could breed to those english. Then you could have a whole flock of splashes running around.

Lynzi, The country house sounds JUST WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE. Good Luck.
have a great Holiday. God Bless, Regards, Aria

Oh I have plenty of these Orps now! LOL I'm up to 8, 2 being roosters. I think I'm done for a while because from here on out I'll hatch from them and keep my own lines going. I already have Stella, an American Lavender, Ella her daughter a blue hen, and Lil Fella, Ella's daughter that is a blue roo. I obtained a few more upon moving here - three blue hens (2 dark blue and 1 light blue) and a splash hen. I also have a Splash Roo who is half English half American. I actually feel bad for Stella because she is American and the smallest of them all - even the pullets! She is going thru a molt right now but I'll be surprised if I get any more eggs from her this coming year because she will be 3 in April.

I used to put my two cents in but figured she has to clean it and live in it more than me. So she gets her way.

I hope you find the perfect house.

I hate cancer and while I'm glad you got your orps, I'm sorry in the way they had to be got.

DW is doing well, so perhaps she'll be as fortunate. Lots of folks don't realize while many survive they're still at risk. B.Cancer does kill many each year. Men and Women.

Does she climb trees ?

R -I've given this some thought too. I don't have a pick up, but thought if I threw a rope over it near the end and then had someone cut it I could pull it so it cleared the coop.

GR-I think this would work ..I thought if you threw a rope over it , put it around a tree in the back i and then pulled it towards the back ..so it cleared the coop.
Make sure you are in front of it so it doesnt get you instead

Yes she has opposable thumbs on her feet too.

I couldn't deal with all the shedding.

I forgot why I came on.

I googled my user name and it gave me the link right to my profile page. Not to mention every picture I posted here.

Point being you may not want to post pictures of your kids.

Well today was a productive day. I got the legbar chick coop cleaned out, and boy did it need it :sick But now it's all fresh and nice in there. Hope the cemanis reward me with more eggs. I do believe my other Tonie Marie hen has started laying, so that's exciting! I realized if I set eggs tomorrow the hatch date would be my birthday, so tomorrow I'll be setting five, maybe six project eggs. My birthday gift to myself!

Happy birthday.

Today was DW's .

I finally got some plastic up and dumped a bale of hay for the chickens to play in. The runs are damp and muddy, but the plastic should keep the snow out and things a bit drier.

Set up a trap for the squirrel and hope to either catch it or kill it. They've been horrible. I've no gun yet but if I get one I'll be setting up a bait station for them to go to, so I can shoot them right off.
