NY chicken lover!!!!

Premier1supplies sells an awesome heatlamp that I have used and proven safe. It’s made of plastic, hangs from a chain and clip, and doesn’t get super burning hot to the touch. Check em out! Highly recommend them.
We got one of them for the piglets last winter, like it so much better than the cheap metal reflector ones we all get at TSC.

So Sorry about your Calf - was he born there or did you buy him ? How long did you have him ? Did he have Diarrhea ? Calfs can get coccidiosis. too

I bought him in PA. He was vet checked and healthy. Had him for 6 weeks. He didn’t have diarrhea and had coccidiosis preventative when we got him home. I think it was the cold that got him. Never getting a calf again. Gonna start with an adult that has been thru winters before.

Could be ...It got really cold ..very quick ...Did he have a stall or barn to get warm in ?
Some animals die and you dont know why .

Yes he was in a barn with the door closed, heavily bedded with straw. He was also in there with 4 goats and they were all laying together. I never saw him shivering so just don’t get it.

So sorry to hear this. I wanted to ask about your emus. They are so beautiful but they scare me lol. Are they friendly? Strong? Why are they raised for meat?

My emus are very friendly as we hatched them and they imprinted on me. They fallow me all over the place. They are very strong and can be dangerous if restrained or trying to move them around. They are a flight animal so they will kick and flail around. They are raised for meat because they are a lean red meat, cheap to feed, and lay between 20 to 50 eggs in their breeding season. They are also very hardy.

I've got them too, if you don't mind me answering also :) Mine are very friendly, especially the female, since I hatched them myself. They are strong animals, though, and you need a good fence to keep them in. My fence is seven feet tall. They can jump over lower fences.

Mine are pets and guard animals (woe to the fox that tries to eat a chicken in THAT pen) but in general they are raised for meat, and the big money to be made from them is from their oil, which is rendered from their fat.

@featherz has one too :) We had kind of an emu hatching party this spring, lol.

Cool! I'm a vegetarian, so wouldn't eat them but they are majestic looking!
