NY chicken lover!!!!

I had posted last week but it might have got lost in the other posts. I am in Waterloo between the northern ends of Cayuga and Seneca lakes. I will keep everyone posted on how things go. Depressing part is TSC called today to tell me the chicks I was looking for were in. I had to tell them I couldn't get them.

Gramma (re: Blondie's pecking order) She's somewhere in the middle. 17 Australorps came after her, but she was bottom of the totem pole before that. I also realized today, after cleaning her poopy butt in my bathtub (eeeeeeewwwwwww) that she has many missing feathers on her butt. Gave her a bath and blew her dry (she crawled onto my lap and closed her eyes... awwww!) and smeared her with NuStock. Maybe she is getting picked on. I'll spend some good time out there Saturday and check things out. No sign of mites and no one else has missing bum feathers.

I got bad news the otherh day. My company downsized a bunch of people and I was one. So I will have to put off getting my flock started until next year. I won't have the $ to do it right now.

Sorry to hear that ..I hope you can a replacement job soon .
My husband is retired ..so we downsized some what also .
We got chickens for survival reasons ..If the economy changes we have eggs & we would have chicken if we had to ....
Chickens dont have to be expensive ..They will eat just about anything ..Leftovers ...They eat all our vegetable scraps ..bread , oatmeal
For extra calcuim we grind up the shells & feed it back to them
We went from 3 bags of garbage a week to 1 bag ..
There is a big start up cost ..Building... Protected Run ESP ..
They pay for their feed now ..( Purina Layer ) from the eggs we sell ...
we only have 8 hens ..however if you start with chicks you have to feed them for 5 months before they produce .
But you have that time to get to know them ...they will be tamer if you raise them from chicks ..
