NY chicken lover!!!!

My hatch is over.. 20 cute little chicks! I think two are from my leghorn eggs, the rest are from CB. Just put one chick down (I HATE doing that) because s/he was born with no eyes and a really messed up navel. Oddly enough it was my only sticky chick and managed to beat his or her way out of the wrong end of the egg. I didn't even help it. I hate hate hate doing that but if I can even get that chicken to grow up poor thing would probably not do well with some of the others. /sniff. I know others have done well with blind chickens, but with school/work etc I would not have given it the care it deserves. On the positive, the others are awesome and CUTE!! :)

I'll put up a pic in a bit. You can tell which ones are from my eggs - big ol yellow chicks. :)

Sorry for the lil one but it was best.

This is one of the eggs I have under Stella right now. It's not the first egg I placed under her but it is definitely the smallest! She's only been sitting on them since Wednesday, so this one may have gone under her Thursday or Friday...

Nice veins.

Breella ~ Cute birds!!

Well I tried moving Stella today to that she's by herself and away from the other hens IF and when these eggs hatch. I moved her to the grow out pen and thats when she decided to get up to get food and water and free range a little bit. So I let her out and put her eggs back in the nest box because I knew thats the spot she'd go back to. Came home from picking up my son and she was back in there sitting on them. Tried moving her again with the eggs she kept looking out the window like she wanted out and was not sitting on them in there. So I brought her back over to her nest box, placed her in there and gave her the eggs back one by one and she tucked them back under her. I'm going to take a break from trying to move her and move her tomorrow night. I just hope she stays in that pen and doesn't look to go back in that other coop. It's tough because if I let the other girls to out to free range, and she wants out as well, I have to leave that coop door open so she can get back in there when she wants to. But if I leave it open the other girls will be curious and wander in there because I have food placed in there for her. I don't know if I should wait to see if she wants out in the morning and wait for her to go back in before I let the other girls out? Or if I should just her out and hope she returns to the grow out pen and not the other coop.

I found two more buried eggs today. They passed the float test and I ate them. Pearl seems to like laying them under the food and water so I moved some of my makeshift nesting boxes there. So close to being able to let them outside all day-- I need to get the roof on and soon because no sooner did I have two of the big ones outside did two hawks pass overhead. Thank goodness the dog is good at chasing them off.

I will take him back if you have to part with him. Generally the Cochins will be dominate over my Silkies but over time mine have come to just ignore each other. My Silkies stay with Silkies and the young birds while my Cochins all stay with the older hens. I think they should be fine though.

I guess I'll wait it out and let the big girls teach him a thing or two and see how it goes. How do I make him friendlier?? He's such a nervous nelly.....like he's got little man syndrome..... Haaaa

heh, I've been told most banty roosters get little man syndrome. But they are so little and stubby you can ignore them. :p Yah kid go away you bother me. Not like my big roo with the big spurs. :)

Seriously tho, I expect my roosters to respect ALL humans, not hurt the hens after a learning period and keep the girls safe, find treats, call for predators, etc. None of mine are really all that friendly unless I have food to give the ladies. :p One day maybe I'll get a cuddly roo but then he'd probably run the wrong way if a hawk is stalking the girls.

Sorry to hear he's picking on yer fuzzies (although most teen roos pretty much are jerks for a while LOL) - but he sure is cute! :)

Thinking I'm gonna let my big girls knock him down a peg or two...not in an extreme way, just a lil bit so as not to hurt him....well maybe just his pride!! Haaa

Hi NY Chicken Lovers,

Only you guys will understand my pain right now. I am so ****** at myself for not listening to my hen last night when she sat on my lap and didn't want to go into the coop to roost. I thought she was just acting weird and carried her into the coop to roost. This morning she was very lethargic and didn't want to leave the coop. I finally figured out that she had a sour crop and I was trying to treat her but she was too far gone and she just past away a couple of minutes ago. This is my first chicken to die on me and I am so ****** at myself right now. It was because I didn't stop to see why she wanted to be on my lap last night that neglected getting her treated sooner. The idea that I caused an animal to suffer and die is killing me right now. She is still in my living room where I thought she would spend the night.

I know I'm being a big baby right now but only you guys would understand.
