NY chicken lover!!!!

Blondie laid another egg. What a strange girl she is. She is still sitting on the eggs for the most part. I don't think I will leave the eggs with her, though. Especially her first time, I just don't think the instincts to take care of babies would be there. Even though she is sitting, the broody noises have pretty much stopped. I think I'll throw these eggs in the incubator and hope for the best. I was really hoping for a momma to raise them. :/ Good news, though... Our neighbor told dh a couple days ago that their dog got a hold of a fox. Fox didn't stand a chance against their dog. Good boy. :ya We partially watched a show on Hulu last night about chicken farms. This one area in OK is so badly contaminated that parts of the river are 70% depleted of oxygen because of overgrowth of algae, caused by the chicken poop. One chicken "house" can contain 25,000 chickens. Sick. They showed video of the insides of the farm. I would much rather eat a healthy chicken than one of those poor things. I don't want to eat my own, but next time I'm our in Macedon I'll pick up a couple (processed) chickens at Nature Berry Farms.
I love Nature Berry Farms! He set me up so my silkies should go broody next year and by then I will be ready for meat birds. He even helps be with gardening questions. We named our Barred Rock we got from him Sandy, turns out that's his where's name lol.
Question...what does everyone do with the unwanted roosters they hatch? I have 7 right now that I need to find something to do with...my idea situation would be finding somebody to take them but I know that wont happen...I would cull them myself but I hate to see them go to waste and I don't know if I have the stomach for it...I just feel terrible...

Yeah a lot of us eat them.
So all this talk of hoop coops has me intrigued. I'm about to build a new, bigger coop and I think I'm leaning that way, but I have a couple questions first. Rancher, I know you have one, so I'd love your advice! 1. How warm does it stay in there in the wintertime? Warm enough that water doesn't freeze, or am I going to need heated buckets? 2. What do you do for nest boxes? 3. I assume the ventilation pretty much takes care of itself? 4. How do you attach each panel to the next one? I get the wooden frame at the bottom but I'm just not sure how the panels themselves go together at the top and sides. 5. What's the best way to attach the tarps and the smaller wire that goes on the outside? 6.What do you do for flooring in the coop? How do you keep it clean/change bedding etc? Thanks for putting up with my questions, if I do decide to go this way I'll probably have more. Also I'd love to see some pictures!
Very good questions I was thinking about building a larger coop.
Oh - I was so excited about my new peeps eating and drinking I forgot to introduce myself. I'm in Vermont, but just over the border - and the VT thread just has no activity. Climate and area about the same as upstate NY. I know a few of you and I was told there is a discussion of hoop houses. I have a mixed flock right now. I do have some cute Millie D'Uccle roos if anyone wants them. They are tiny - and friendly with me, but starting to fight each other.
Welcome
that's I have been doing. Building my wife and I a camper. pictures are reversed and I have several more, but you get the idea. I get left alone, hang with mama's and chicks all day. Good stuff.
love the camper!
Yeah, I used it at first to get the dirt out. Chickens and their filthy feet. I kept it wrapped up while I was at work today and will do the same tomorrow.
I hope it heals okay, had as cat take a chunk out of me took forever to heal.
Hello fellow NYers...anyone from Long Island? Suffolk County? Im in southampton...have chickens tons of ducks turkeys and geese...ive also dabbled with quail and pheasants... Katherine :)
Welcome!

Dh was told by a doctor that Neosporin should be used ONCE for a wound.  After that, just keep it clean.  Not sure if that makes sense to me, but that's what he was told!  Hope it heals quickly!
Welcome to the newbies!

It was a good move to get the incubator started up today.  Right after she laid the second egg, it was like something snapped and she wanted nothing to do with the eggs.  She's back in the coop and Oscar has been chasing her around relentlessly.  Poor thing.  I'll have to call tomorrow and get him GONE.
My incubator is at 95' and 53% humidity.  I don't dare turn the temp up anymore, as it's midnight and I don't want to accidentally fry them.  I candled them again and out of 6 eggs, I'm pretty sure 2, possibly 3, are viable.  Hopefully I'll get at least the 2.
Show tomorrow... wish me luck!

Get the bandage off and the neosporin wash it with some soap and water and let it heal. Bandages create warm moist sark environments which promote bacteria growth plus keep it moist not allowing it to heal. Unless you have an active infection neosporin is actually bad and even if it is infected you need to keep off the good tissue it will break down good tissue. When original wound happens wash it and then you can apply neosporin as a preventative just once but if you cleaned it well no need for that even. Your soreness is probably the neosporin doing it the slight redness that was around those scratches was just the body doing what it it was supposed to do it was part of the inflammation process. Okay can you tell I was an infection control nurse for a while LOL,

AQHA---I eat my extra/unwanted roos.  I figure since I spent all that time hatching and raising them, I might as well honor all that work by eating them.  Once you have processed your first couple, it is easy to do.  Think of it as honoring the animal who gives his life that you may be able to eat and sustain your life.

That's what I would like to do. As I said I don't want them to go to waste and I know they would be good to eat. I guess I just have to get over the culling them part. Once they are dead I don't think I would have a problem it's just getting the courage to do the first one...

Get someone to help you the first time. It is easier if there is an experienced person coaching you through it and providing a little show and tell for encouragement.

Just untill you build me one of these for the family to live in also.

Put me down for one too. Gotta have two bathrooms though. I expect DD to be here for a long time, unless Pr$nce Charming comes along.

I can't keep up with this thread.

Just checking in. Managed to get some post holes dug before the rain started. AND some smalls trees cut down. Paid Jesse the same $8 an hr I'm making. So I'm basically working to pay him to do things I can't.

Chickens doing ok, no losses on the chicks. I may put some EE under the BR hen since she won't give up and folks will most likely take those. Right? They should come by the end of July.

ta, ta for now,

Rancher, oh I wish it would stop, raining Hicks.

FYI, skeeters were NOT part of the original world. I could kick Adam and Eves butt!

Welcome to all the newbies wherever you are from. All chicken enthusiasts are always welcome.

Stony--cant wait to see the finished camper. I like the design. I like teardrops too but this one looks like you can stand up in it. How tall will it be?

Long day at work yesterday and my ankle is telling me so. Came home to find one of the chicks had somehow fallen into the outside water bowl Poor thing was screaming and momma didnt know what to do. I heard the distress calls as soon as I opened the car door so I dropped everything and ran over to see what was happening. I picked it up out of the water and dried it off with my shirt and held it for a bit to warm it up. It seemed fine so I stuck it in the coop and shoved everyone else in there as well. Eowyn already had it tucked under her when I opened the door to look in. I will be removing that dish so there are no more mishaps. Everyone can go inside and use the chick waterer for a drink.

Off to the pharm today. Hoping for a quiet day so I can sit down and rest this ankle.

Im glad you caught the chick in time ..
It adds a new dimension to the term Chick Waterer ?

Quote: Love the detailing on it ...knew it was yours when I saw the pic .
Does a Standy mean you cant stand up in it ? 5 ft tall ..arent you taller than that ?
