I love Nature Berry Farms! He set me up so my silkies should go broody next year and by then I will be ready for meat birds. He even helps be with gardening questions. We named our Barred Rock we got from him Sandy, turns out that's his where's name lol.Blondie laid another egg. What a strange girl she is. She is still sitting on the eggs for the most part. I don't think I will leave the eggs with her, though. Especially her first time, I just don't think the instincts to take care of babies would be there. Even though she is sitting, the broody noises have pretty much stopped. I think I'll throw these eggs in the incubator and hope for the best. I was really hoping for a momma to raise them. :/ Good news, though... Our neighbor told dh a couple days ago that their dog got a hold of a fox. Fox didn't stand a chance against their dog. Good boy.We partially watched a show on Hulu last night about chicken farms. This one area in OK is so badly contaminated that parts of the river are 70% depleted of oxygen because of overgrowth of algae, caused by the chicken poop. One chicken "house" can contain 25,000 chickens. Sick. They showed video of the insides of the farm. I would much rather eat a healthy chicken than one of those poor things. I don't want to eat my own, but next time I'm our in Macedon I'll pick up a couple (processed) chickens at Nature Berry Farms.
Yeah a lot of us eat them.Question...what does everyone do with the unwanted roosters they hatch? I have 7 right now that I need to find something to do with...my idea situation would be finding somebody to take them but I know that wont happen...I would cull them myself but I hate to see them go to waste and I don't know if I have the stomach for it...I just feel terrible...![]()
Very good questions I was thinking about building a larger coop.So all this talk of hoop coops has me intrigued. I'm about to build a new, bigger coop and I think I'm leaning that way, but I have a couple questions first. Rancher, I know you have one, so I'd love your advice! 1. How warm does it stay in there in the wintertime? Warm enough that water doesn't freeze, or am I going to need heated buckets? 2. What do you do for nest boxes? 3. I assume the ventilation pretty much takes care of itself? 4. How do you attach each panel to the next one? I get the wooden frame at the bottom but I'm just not sure how the panels themselves go together at the top and sides. 5. What's the best way to attach the tarps and the smaller wire that goes on the outside? 6.What do you do for flooring in the coop? How do you keep it clean/change bedding etc? Thanks for putting up with my questions, if I do decide to go this way I'll probably have more. Also I'd love to see some pictures!
WelcomeOh - I was so excited about my new peeps eating and drinking I forgot to introduce myself. I'm in Vermont, but just over the border - and the VT thread just has no activity. Climate and area about the same as upstate NY. I know a few of you and I was told there is a discussion of hoop houses. I have a mixed flock right now. I do have some cute Millie D'Uccle roos if anyone wants them. They are tiny - and friendly with me, but starting to fight each other.![]()
