NY chicken lover!!!!

I finished harvesting my garlic today. They were small but they work for in my pickles. And I got maybe a quart of beans. My girls love their fresh veggies.

Off to check the cheeps.
Made 9 quarts of bread & butter pickles. I still have about 5 left over from last fall, I guess I need to get going eating them....

Froze some string beans. picked Kale for salads. Tomatoes still small & green...sigh. But, I'll have a boat load of brussel sprouts....now, just have to find out how to preserve them.

I never liked Brussel Sprouts until I read about sautéing them with bacon, brown sugar, and, forgot what else....delish! Oh, I remember, balsamic vinegar, double yum!

Anyone within an hour or so from the Utica/Syracuse area have any Saxony or Appleyard ducks for sale? I'm only looking for a trio of either breed.

Thanks,
Sue

Marq,

I never liked brussel sprouts either until I started cooking them like this:

  • Cut sprouts in half after removing the tougher outer leaves and part of base/stalk (not too much, or else the sprout falls apart)

  • Spread them around cut side up on a baking sheet, without crowding too much

  • Drizzle with olive oil

  • Sprinkle with salt and pepper

  • Bake in preheated 400F oven for about 20-25 minutes. Depends on your oven and whether you like that darker carmelization on the sprouts (I do!!)

They are so simple and easy this way. I would imagine they're nutritious, too. My hubby and I love them.

LYNZI,

I think you are a lot like me in that we try to be nice to everyone and you end up in uncomfortable situations like what you're going through. People can read way too much into someone just acting friendly.

I think everyone's advice to block the guy is spot on. Nip it in the bud.

Hopefully you're out of that position for good within a week or so. I know you're counting the minutes.

By the way, the new duckies are sweet! Handsome!

RANCHER,

Sorry to hear your BR's did not return. That's really too bad.

I'll be scarce on here again for a few days, but will check in as I can. T.G.I.F. to everyone tomorrow and have a good weekend.

Hi everyone! It's been awhile since I've posted - I've been crazy busy with work and getting a new car and fixing up the new car. I've been so busy I've made very little headway on my coop, but hopefully I can change that this weekend.

Lemon's chicks are doing well - she did lose two, but she still has eleven. All are growing quickly and getting their feathers like crazy. Not long now before I start letting them out of the A-Frame to forage with their mom in the evenings. Still waiting for Penny to abandon her chicks. I'm thinking I may keep one of the buff orps but the rest will go. And I STILL haven't found a home for the drake dropped at my house, which is too bad, because with a little fattening up he's turning out to be gorgeous.

And, does anyone want some guineas? I have three I need to find a home for - I only wanted two and the person refused to sell me less than five, ugh. Two royal purples and a pearl.

How old are they? If still chick can't fly, I'll take them! Drake? what breed is he?

Quote: I only learned to like them last summer, Now, due to Vitamin K watching, I cannot eat them as much as I'd like...figures, so I go slow and want to preserve them so I can spread out eating them all winter....

I love Kale chips...so easy to make. put leaves on baking sheet, spead with olive oil, salt & pepper & any other tasty thing you want to add, then bake in oven until slightly brown on edges. Cool, & eat....yummy.

Lynzi the ducks look happy. The picture doesn't do them justice though. I went through the rest of them last night and don't think I hatched a drake. Ordinarily that wouldn't be bad but I would like to cross one back to Bonnie in hopes of a couple chocolates.
Rancher that's not the same food. We use Nutro, that is for Naturo and they've had recalls before on that food. The boys are still safe for now.
No brussel sprouts here. I learned to hate them as a kid and still stay away from them.
