I've cooked venison back strap and roasts in the crockpot following the French dip recipe in one of my cook books for slow cooking. The recipe calls for beef but in turns out excellent with venison. It marinates the meat overnight in soy sauce, water, and herb mixture right in the crock.


It's official I'm having a chicken get together Saturday May 17th at my home. More details to come as I figure them out.

WOOOHOOO!!! I'm coming. As soon as I open my 2014 calendar I will mark it down. (As soon as I find out where my 2014 calendar WENT. I know I bought it, just have been busy as a one armed paper hanger, so stuff is everywhere. Maybe I put the new calendar with the old calendar? Now where did I put the OLD calendar?)

Helloooo....(as Tigger would say) There is no way I can catch up on over 20 pages of posts I missed. I hope that everyone's problems have resolved and everyone's furnace is in running order.

My mom FINALLY has a closing date on the house she is selling AND the one she is buying, so we are in the home stretch regarding being at her house daily to help pack, sort and shift boxes from one room to another to make space. Just the final move, NEXT WEEKEND...eww...then I can do something *I* want to do. (Sleep is high on my "to do" list)

Gramma Chick, yes, the roosters of the sumantra breed/cross breed have VERY small wattles.

I will try to keep up from this point forward.

Tab? Did you have the baby yet? Did I miss it? (Actually, anyone can answer that one...I just can't find the time to read all the posts I missed to find out for myself)

Does anyone breed Australorps? I am thinking of adding a couple of them to my flock in the spring and don't want to wait for them to grow up from chicks. Just want to buy a couple from someone who is down sizing at some point next spring.

How come my ducks want to sleep on top of the table, instead of under it? They are getting pooped on by the chickens roosting in the rafters. I need a duck house. I'll add that to the list for NEXT spring.

Australorps- chick princess had a BA roo ...she might have ladies too .
I do too ...Have a BA Roo ...we havent hatched eggs from them yet . Hoping to in the spring .
I am hoping for my little samatra hen to do some hatching for me

My girlies yesterday. They both wanted to hold the baby so I told them they both could and I took a picture. I need to get my DH another bat for his other hand. I got him one a couple years ago and labeled it daddy's big stick.

Cass-- I had Nora Heath 10-1-13. She was 8# 14oz and has gained steadily since. Last Friday she was 9#14oz at her appointment.

Heading to CT tomorrow morning with the kids. Called my mom this morning and she informed me that there was a bobcat on their deck this morning! Thank God my parents have a garage so store the three silkies I'll be picking up Saturday morning! Otherwise I might not have been bringing them home! :-/

LOL, thanks, I don't know where that came from!! It was getting late and I have been grossly sleep deprived. When I was looking at some pics of my chicks, there was something about Chum's expression that just looked like she wanted to talk....so her advice column was born. She may turn up again at some random time, who knows?

You don't say. I've never understood the crying thing myself. I'd heard, what was good for the goose was good for the gander, and tried that one. It got me no where with the wife. She just said " oh knock it off you big baby ! "

HELP! I may or may not have a sick chicken. When I went out to shut up the coop for the night I have a chicken that is whisling when she breathes. I figured out that it is my BC maran hen. She just started to molt this week and has lost her feathers on the front of her neck. I don't think that has anything to do with her whisling? It sounds like when one of my kids have a stuffy nose and are sleeping sick snore whisling. I looked at her good she doesn't have any discharge and her head isn't puffy at all. Is this something that I should be worried about? Do I need to seperate her from the rest? Help me. So far I have had no problems and I've only had them for 6 months so I'm super new at this. They are more like my pets then anything so Iwant to make sure that they are okay...I'm the type of person that hate it when one of my house plants dies, I don't kow what I woule do if I lost one of my girls. I'm sure that she isn't going to die...but I have no idea..

You could separate her. What is the humidity like inside your coop? Remember chickens can deal with the cold but not the hot and humid. I like to keep a hygrometer in the coop.

When cutting my spearmint I got a nice nose full and wondered if like eucalyptus it might help their sinuses too. I do plan to plant it around the chicken runs. It smells great when you cut it with the mower.

My girls (especially my BR) will a make a noise like that when they all go after the feed I put out for them. If I give them the mash it's almost like a powder so it goes all over and sometimes gets stuck in their noses making them sneeze or wheeze until they get it out.

I've seen this too. Now I mix it with milk or water. Sometimes I put ACV or vitamins in the water too. I've found they waste very little this way and can clean the pan. I also toss in the some grit now and then.

I need to buy at least four more hens. I'd prefer two who lay large brown eggs and two who lay large white eggs but I'd take all brown layers or all white layers. I don't care much about breed since I just need eggs! (Though I'd like more leghorns and barred rocks breed isn't important at this moment) I'm selling through my eggs every week and have more people at work asking to buy eggs.

Anyone have hens they want to sell who lay white or brown eggs?

Please be sure to quarantine any birds you do get.

What are you charging for eggs? If it's more than $2.25 you could buy mine and resell them, til you get more hens.

Hoop coop #2 going up today. I'm setting a goal of done by Sunday, but that may be just a smidge optimistic. Still, this one is going much more smoothly than my first one, probably because now I've had practice and I know what to do and what to avoid.

Also, if anyone wants some faverolles, if my hatch next Friday goes well, it looks like I'll have some extras roos and pullets, which I'll sell as pairs, or single roos, if anyone wants one. I'm really in love with these little things, I'm so glad I decided on them when I was picking a breed to focus on. And of course the one lone duckling is adorable - I'm starting to think the secret to a really friendly duck is raising it with chicks.

This am while letting mine out the young BM roo came at me. He even chased me into the run to get at me. I don't know why they're so sneaky and wait til your back is turned. I chased him around the yard on the way back in. Stupid bird. His father has not given me any trouble.

I also have a blk orp roo that has gone after DW, but not me. This is a trait I don't fully understand.

I do like my hoop coops. I wish I had a truck as they are easy enough to make and can also be make longer than I can afford with lumber. I'd like to add to mine.

That may not be a good thing considering I'd just get more chickens. Though it would make a good grow out coop for roos to be processed.
