Gorgeous birds! Thanks for sharing! What is their temperament like? Are they flighty or calm, social or talkative? How are they with the cold? Are there any more common birds u might compare them to? Not tons of info out there on brabanters.

She's a buff![]()
Quote: They are very good layers, large white eggs, don't eat much, and depending some are calm if you raise them. The ones I got as adults were more flighty. They are rare, so I like that. They have the "devil" comb, a V, so good in winter,no frostbite. They are pretty hearty, from Holland.
Well I just fit six goose eggs and fifteen silkie eggs in a brinea eco 20. That was a squeeze, and it forced me to move all my mutt eggs from my layer flock to my homemade incubator. Which is fine, I get great hatches from it - when it behaves itself. Sometimes the thermostat 'forgets' to turn off the light. This is what happened to me and ruined my NYD hatch. It forgot to turn the light off on the 31st and killed all the chicks but one, which was devastating because a bunch had pipped and were perfect and would have hatched otherwise.
I'm debating moving them to my LG, which is affectionately call the murder box, because it does fine right up till lockdown when suddenly, with no changes at all, it kills the chicks just before they hatch. I can't figure it out. But I'm thinking of letting it do the incubating up till lockdown and then locking down in my homemade, reducing the chance of it forgetting to turn the light off, since it seems to happen only after it's been running for a while, like three weeks. Ugh, I should just buy a darn water heater or wafer thermostat for it and figure out how to wire it up.
Chicken Nugget, one of our "lap chickens"...
Luv, we tried putting our chicks on their back to see if they are male or female. All 3 would gladly have fallen asleep like that. They love getting little chest and back rubs. They all have spurs and our frizzle sizzle is making a honking noise. They may all be roos. So that concept of putting the chick on it's back didn't work for us. We have 1 silkie and 2 cochin/silkie mix.
omylord I LOVE your Brabanters. Your girls are beautiful Marquisella!
I was just going to post ... We went and got some chicks tonight and I'm not chickless anymore!!!![]()
I ended up with 2 cream Brabanter pullets and one bigger cream Brabanter chick I think is a roo. 3 Mottled Java pullets and one little tiny sickly looking Polish they gave me as a "special needs chick" since I had it in my hand. My DH was like "yes of course you find the only chick out of 300 that isn't well"![]()
IT JUMPED OUT AT ME, I couldn't just leave it, the little Polish was in with the Brabanters and was getting all run over .. he was all fluffed up trying to sleep and you know all sleepy how they get when they don't feel good. For God's sake so I been giving it eyedropper of gatorade and yougurt, gave some antibiotic and the other vitamin electrolyte stuff.. hes in a little bowl with bedding in the crate with the others.. they are leaving him alone so far.. I think he needs to be near them tho since they all talk. hes just sleepin. Maybe the medicine will kick in and he'll be improved in the morning. The crop looks kinda big on the little guy even before I hydrated him..![]()
That Brabanter I think is a roo is so darn cute its getting the topknot already and early tail feather..
I'll put some pics when I get battery for my camera in the morning.
Roosters can get along ...it will be raised in your flock ...Here's a pic of my babies. I finally got new batteries for the camera. Well at least 4 of the 5 the other runner moved her head. It was on the pekins back. it was co cute.
I'm thinking that the cochin chick on the left is a roo and the one on the right is a hen. The left one has a comb twice as big as the other one and it is bigger too. Now how am I supposed to break my little mans heart to tell him that one of his little chicks may have to go. I think it was overnight that my pekin is starting to turn white.
