NY chicken lover!!!!

I candled 2 of the Am eggs last night under my broody, one I could see some great development! Lots of veins, looked like it was right on target for day 9. The other I couldn't really see any veins but it had a decent size air sac. I wanted to look at more but felt like I was pushing my luck with her letting me pick them up.

Has anyone here tried water candling? Some of the youtube videos were neat to see.

We have just started with chickens and have two sets of chicks that are about 7 weeks apart in age, with the older 6 being 10 weeks old. In total, 13 chickens... 2 Barnevelders, 2 Brabanters: Cream & Gold, 2 Brahmas: Light and Buff, 2 Light D'Uccle Bantams, 1 D'Anvers Blue Quail Bantam, 2 Easter Eggers, 1 Plymouth Barred Rock and 1 Welsummer. We got all our chicks from Nature Berry Farm, and we would recommend them to ANYONE :D

Would love to talk to other chicken people in my area :)
I love my barnies I got from them! They were the most consistent layers over the winter. And EE's are just plain fun! I love Keuka Lake, I went to Keuka College for undergrad. I do miss running along the lake.

Ok...I know the older silkie is the blue one, then...because its grey...

But what is this one?

Marquisella, to answer your question, I'm not sure if he has them running together in mixed pens or not. He has them in a different coop from the barn, and I don't ever get out to that coop. If I had to guess, I'd say the colors are all mixed together. So this could very well be a mixed chick.

But I'll have a white, the blue, and this one...so maybe I can make something of it. Will depend on what's a rooster and what's a hen, lol. I primarily got them for broodies, and because they're so stinkin' cute.

Marquisella--this looks like a partridge to me. The markings certainly say that. A blue partridge. Do you concur?

Morning all. A grey day today and feels like rain. Everyone was antzy to get out this morning. The brats are no longer afraid of the ramp and piled out as soon as I opened the pop door. 6 of them go to their new home on friday. I let Little man and his girls out for some freerange time. Junior too but put the pullet he is with back in with her daddy as Junior still hasnt learned to ask first before trying to mate with her. She is happy to not be chased,

So I have some extra mutt chicks available if anyone wants some. I can bring them to chickenstock. Let me know.

Jlaw---You would need to breed a few generations to get rid of the black leakage. You may want to consider getting a decent roo and pair him with your best hen and only hatch from them.

Got another bator full of blue silkie chicks cooking. Hoping for a decent hatch.

Off to the pharm for a phun philled day!

Pharm - I feel like we live in two different ends of the world sometimes LOL when you're having beautiful weather it's crummy here and vice versa. Enjoy your day :)

I was thinking partridge as well, but honestly, I have no clue, lol.

Welcome! We are neighbors! We live in Penn Yan.

How is Nature Berry Farm as far as quality goes? Are they considered hatchery quality? I didn't realize they were so close. Honestly, for some reason, I thought Macedon was on the other side of Rochester! (We're not originally from upstate NY, lol)

So the one broody I was counting on is a PITA. She is broody but she keeps nest hoping. I stuck 8 eggs under her and she sat on them for a day or two and then moved over to another nest for a day or two and now moved back to the original one. It makes me want to scream. I have 5 broodies but I can't decide which one I should put eggs under. Two of them I wouldn't trust to be good mom's, they are just not high enough on the pecking order and the one failed miserably last year, one keeps nest hoping, another one doesn't seem serious yet, and the 5th one camps out under the front porch so I can't put eggs under her and I'm pretty sure she's been sitting for more than 21 days and nothing has happened (I just don't think she gets any rooster attention in order to have fertile eggs). I'm so frustrated...

For those who have the Brinsea octagon 20, can you tell me why there are some on Amazon listed for $239 or so and others that are $300-$400+? Both say they have the turner, so what's the difference?

Some are the regular one and some are the digital display advanced. You best bet is to go right to brinesa website to the right click o n web specials they have a bunch of them on sale and if you enter the code whisper you get 10% off they send me an email monthly with their special code and that is May's code.
