I came home from the picnic to eight speckled sussex chicks in the incubator. That's eight out of eight eggs, shipped! Can't complain about that![]()
Really? I had no idea this was the two options! You mean I can't just keep my TSC chicks and continue on like before? My birds seem healthy (I realize that doesn't mean anything), but as long as folks always use general hygiene habits with chickens, which should always be the case, isn't it fine?Great day at the picnic yesterday. Got my free LG incubator from Marq. Hubby is going to try installing a fan in it, he already talked to Travis on how.
I see all this chatter on FB about the Salmonella outbreak at Mt Healthy, and they are the ones that supply most all TSC, my local one included. What is everyone's thoughts on this? I got 12 chicks from them in March and really don't want to kill my babies. We sell eggs. Always wash our hands after handling birds or collecting eggs, although little girl usually ends up with fingers in her mouth before that ( trying to break that habit still). It seems the 2 options are to quarantine my flock forever and assume they are all infected or cull the chicks.
I don't know if this helps but apple cider vinager ( with the mother) kills sallmonella .. Idk how to apply that to chickens but it's something you can look into. But you can soak fruit with salmonella and ecoli on it in a solution of vinager and water ( I forget the ratio) and it cleans them. I just read an article ...Great day at the picnic yesterday.
