If your husband is handy, there are some nice, simple plans for compost tumbler out there - really speeds up composting!!

I have no doubt that one of those Blue containers being sold on CL could be converted into a tumbler/composter with ease.

This is a big problem. Do you know how often my kids lick the bowl when I'm making cakes and brownies? I don't know what to do now. And does this mean the birds i hatched but have been brooding with the tsc birds are likely infected? Is there a test to know for sure?

I have a friend who only uses my eggs in his smoothies. Which is why I try to keep a closed flock. Be aware that mice/rats and other rodents carry this disease. I learned early on that keeping chickens means to have a place to quarantine birds, either sick or new to me.

If you lose one bird, don't stress. If begin to lose more then one then worry.

One thing I will ask is that I lost only roosters one spring. Any one know why that might be? They were not young birds and were not in the same coop or area. Both Del roosters in one coop got sick and had to be put down. Hens are fine. Also the BR roosters. No hens in that coop got sick either.

Yup those were from me! I marked them in case the person hatching them wanted to keep track of which eggs came from the KC hen and the Runner hens. There might be a chance the KC eggs that hatch will be pure khaki Campbells. I don't think my black runner ever mated with my KC hen. I just had 4 hatch and there was a dark brown duckling in there but back then I didn't know who's eggs were who's.

Big thanks to Pharm for these guys. There was a small scuffle between the roo and Hilda this morning. After I figured she sufficiently beat the tar out of him I figured I better separate them. The coop door is back open and I think he figured out she was the queen around that pen. You just don't mess with a broody silkie and her chicks

The deed was done in 20 minutes and Bill is now relaxing in the fridge. Got some nice breast meat and legs off him. The backyard is quieter now. My silkies ran when they realized what we were up to. They hate when we butcher a bird.

Chris---you made me laugh! Im sure Junior got told in more ways than one by Hilda. You just dont mess with a broody. Im sure he will mind his manners a bit better around her now!

I have pictures up in an album on my profile under chickenstock. I will warn you I am not the best picture taker but they are there.

Now to go clean 3 coops, tag more reds and integrate the the juviniles and hope for no blood!

Anyone know where Clydes gets their chicks from? This is where I bought mine this year....and I have them mingling with the meat chicks so I sure hope they dont have anything. How would I know? Are there any signs?

I think it was Meyer or mcmurray. Definitely not mt healthy. When I get back home I can look around for the chick box they gave me (they didn't have any other boxes for me).

are the runners a cross with a kc roo? Noah is excited to hatch ducks. We never have hatched ducks before . His fav are runners. He has two fawn and white runners hatched in April. Are kc easy ducks? I'll have to look them up...

KCs were the friendliest of all my ducks but I was feeding them out of a bucket from hand everyday and the followed me around everywhere. They are now with Marq so I can have/hatch pure runner eggs. The runners may end up being a mix but there's really no telling until they hatch and you let them grow out a little. My black runner got hit by a car a few weeks ago so there's no telling who their eggs are fertilized by now.

Ok, I feel a bit better, lol. Because the prospect of culling 23 chicks and having to start over this spring was not too appealing.

I know that you're not supposed to lick the bowl, eat cookie dough, etc etc., because there's *always* a risk. But as the risk was relatively low, I never worried about it, and we've never gotten sick.
