NY chicken lover!!!!

All you birders out there:

Have you ever seen a Blue Heron sitting in a tree? I have a Great Blue Heron sitting in a bent over tree out back looking at the pond; probably looking for frogs for breakfast. Silliest thing I have seen a long while.
blue herons have nests in trees used in the spring, to raise their young. usually lots of herons all breed in the same place. i believe this is called a Rookery. i have one behind my house and there is a huge one west of montezuma off the thruway, when the leaves are off, i'll bet you can see over 100 nests, pretty cool

When I was in TX it was nice to see White Herons.

This am while letting out the chickens I saw a Hummingbird. Do you know why Hummingbirds hum?

I've had a heron walking through the horse pasture last and this year. The diversion ditch needs cleaning so right now it is pretty wet out there. Of course haven't seen him back since I brush hogged it down.
Worked the fair yesterday, walked around a bit before and after. Poultry was disappointing as always. Didn't see any that looked horribly sick, but the quality was poor. I was checking out the Wyandottes specifically. Several for sale that were terribly cross-beaked. In the show cages I seen a straight comb, poor lacing, wrong color, most wrong body shape and one with white ear lobes. The best looking silver laced hen was in the group pen adjoining the pond pen. Think Wyandottes may be my breed of choice to focus on, some day.

Friday I was at the Fair, and I was much happier with the poultry barn. There was less over crowding, and the cages were much cleaner. I am not knowledgable about the fine points of the breeds, so I was pleased with the more appealing and healthier environment. I also don't think there were as many, which is fine since in the past there were only a few exhibitorswho brought every bird they had.

I went yesterday and am going tomorrow.

Didn't take a long time on the chickens, but my DD did make a comment that made sense. Perhaps the stress is what's causing all the feather loss. I can't imagine keeping a flock as bad as some of these.

If I did switch to Wy's I'd go with Blues since I like the color. Still I'm working on laying quality and size too. The bigger the better. Jerseys G's might be nice too.

Why do Humming birds hum? Cuz they don't know the words.
