So I figured I'd post a pic and see if anybody can tell me what's wrong with this chick and a couple of his siblings who seem to have the same issue (but not as bad as him). Anybody have any ideas? It seems as though the feather shafts on the wings are preventing the feathers from actually erupting. And there aren't many feather shafts erupting on the back at all. There's another chick in this group that, since hatching, has breathed very heavy. If you pick him up, you can feel his heart beating very rapidly. Faster than the other chicks. He's smaller than the others but is growing. I expected him to pass some time ago but...he's still going and is otherwise healthy! But I can't figure out these bald chicks. And btw, googling bald chicks...don't recommend it!
I have had chicks like that. It seems they just take longer to feather out. It was that way with yamato gunkei and barnevelders. Now with my brahmas I see the same thing. It's usually the males too. Here are few pics of my blue partridge brahmas. One is a runt but you get the idea.
It was. I didn't win that one. I did get the Appenzeller Spitzhaubens though. I bought one of their rare chick before and I got some cool light sussex, isbar and supposedly barbezieux and lyonnaise. I have a few of their lines right now...Sulmtalers...total sweethearts. Bielfelders...Isbars....Svart hona's and some legbars. All healthy and cool chicks. I really like them a lot. My favorites are the Hona's!
I'm sorry you did not win the auction. I love their rare chick specials. I have way to many chicks now and won one a few weeks ago. I was trying for another silver double laced barnevelder. A hawk took my roo. I have a light sussex hen from them, very big. A bear got the other Roo and pullet. I have their new line of isbars. The roos have had a tendency of becoming nasty. I had to get rid of them as I ended up with roos and no pullets. Now I have 6 more and 5 are roos. At least I have 1 Pullet and they are all black. 2 of the roos have a defective comb, so they will be going. I have 1 niederrhirner roo. He is so big compared to the others and such a cool personality. I'm so tempted to get more just to have an excuse to keep him. What color are your sulmtalers? My favorite eggs are the bielefelder. Bresse are second. I don't have any hona's. What do you like about them? I would love to get more gunkeis. The bear got mine. Right now I'm focusing on breeding my blue black splash bresse. I have some lyonnaise but am selling them at chickenstock. The frizzle is looking really nice. I have a whole bunch of cool stuff due to hatch this summer. I'm super excited. Oh and we have one spitzhauben hen that my son named rock star.
Wow you all hear about that fire down in the Hudson Valley, Roosa Gap State Forest and the Shawangunk Ridge State Forest? 1,740 acres, jumped a highway. They say it was started by someone burning garbage.
It's DRY out there, where's our spring rains?

Yeah I think I'm going to hold off. Have a ton of willow branches and chunks to burn by my pond. I'm sure it would be fine but with our burn ban if someone drove by from the fire department they might not care much for it.
We had dropped a bunch of trees in the fall, and this spring we cut them up and I burned the tops. Had our last fire on Sunday, then Monday they had the weather report and all kinds of stuff about it being dry. So glad I got it done before they would have wanted my hide. The ground was moist around my fire sites, and now I have lot of wood ashes for the dust bathing!

Congrats on winning the spitz. I've been watching the rba spitz auctions as I'm trying to focus on that breed. I've got 36 spitz chicks and several eggs in the bator of various ages, colors, and lines. Love their personalities & their looks.
Sounds like you've got a great mix. It will interesting to watch all the different rare breeds as they grow out and compare them. Please keep us posted on ur findings.

I'm going to guess that the other chicks are eating the feathers. What is the protein percent of their feed? Marans typically need a higher protein feed.
