NY chicken lover!!!!

If Malay's are hard to find, why would you cross them with JG's?  Or am I miss understanding you?

Just thought it would be a cool cross, maybe make a even huger or at least taller chicken. That's what originally brought me to BYC as a lurker, there was threads of others wondering what such a cross would end up as, didn't find anyone that had actually done it.

When would you be ordering from Greenfire? SandHill has to the end of the month to fill my order, if it doesn't happen I'd be interested, but I'd have to see what happens with them first. If you have to order soon, no big deal we have enough young laying hens to keep us in eggs and I'll wait till next spring, if SandHill doesn't pull through, I'm not optimistic anymore being they confirmed my order for May 5.

@LadyHawkeAvry maranfarmer563 does have a breeding pair of Malay. He said he hasn't been getting many eggs and has only hatched three and is hoping for more hens. Probably not selling any right now but at least we know some are around. He's in northern PA down below Binghamton Elmira area if I remember right.

GOT AN E MAIL FROM GREENFIRE THAT THEY ARE HAVING A "PRE SALE" ON SOME BREEDS. DID ANYONE ELSE GET THIS?  IS ANYONE ELSE INTERESTED IN ORDERING FROM GREEN FIRE?  I CAN'T AFFORD THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF CHICKS BUT WOULD LIKE TO ORDER SOMETHING.  IS THERE ANYONE INTERESTED IN ORDERING WITH ME?

IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED THIS E MAIL AND ARE INTERESTED I CAN FORWARD IT TO YOU. IF YOU SEND YOUR EMAIL.

I'M INTERESTED IN THE  LAVENDER WYANDOTTES, BUT YOU MAY BE INTERESTED IN SOMETHING ELSE.  DEPENDING ON WHO ELSE IS INTERESTED WE COULD WORK TOGETHER TO KEEP LAVENDER WYANDOTTES.   Or you would order another breed.

In other news back home. Lots to do to get back  in the swing of things. Haven't forgotten those who I owe money and have your paypal account info, but United airlines lost our bag with our bills and check book in it. I am NOT happy.  We are waiting to hear from them but I know we're going to have to go to the airport again!

I'm liking the idea of lavender Wyandottes - how much of a sale are they having, and when were you looking at ordering?

This broody is going to be the death of me...and I think its all my fault for moving her in the first place. So I put her back on the big bird side of the coop. Put her sacrificial eggs in the nest and she immediately hopped onto the nest, settled in, and gave me a smug look. YOU WIN, BROODY!

She sat there for much of the day...at least, every time I peeked, she was sitting. Buuuuut....now she's off the nest, hanging out with the other birds, and not looking at all like she's interested in getting back on her eggs. I don't know how long she's been off the nest. Good thing I put the good eggs in the incubator. My question now is...if she's lost the interest to sit on her eggs, is she going to be interested in taking care of these chicks when they hatch on Monday?

In the meantime, I booted the bigger cockerels (8-9 weeks old) over to the big bird side, and brought Attila the Hen out of the brood box with her three chicks. Put her and her week olds in the grow out side of the coop and she immediately set to informing the rest of the chicks in there, who's the boss. She's taking good care of her chicks, and so far...she's protecting them from the few remaining 8-9 week olds that are in with her.

If the second broody does not take her chicks when they hatch, can I just stick them in with Attila the Hen? Will she care that they are a week and a half younger than the first three?

I feel like I totally fudged this whole thing up. Next time, as soon as the hen goes broody, she's going over into the broody side and staying there.

You probably broke her when you kept fighting with her and moving her to the new nest even when she didn't want to sit there. I wouldn't give her the chicks now, she probably won't be interested and won't care for them, or worse, she might kill them. Don't give them to the other hen, either - she will know they aren't hers and won't care for them, the age gap is too big. I once tried to give a hen a new chick just three days after her first hatched - nope. She knew it wasn't hers, pecked at it, wouldn't let it under her, etc. Plus she's at a stage now where she is probably pretty active with her existing babies, so even if she did take newborns they might not be able to keep up. And, she's going to leave her babies at some point, and usually that's around six weeks, so if she did that, you'd then have the new chicks abandoned early too. I think your best bet is going to be to raise the chicks in a brooder.

I have read about this but never saw it until now. This is my set of pair bonded ganders, patiently babysitting my three little goslings...

Okay folks here's my plan with the Green Fire order.

All participants will have to pay "up front". This way we all get to split the shipping. Too, I'm not far from the Postal Airport "hub". I also am not far from the P.O. and have a friend that works there and will call me when the chicks arrive.

I can't afford to order enough chicks by myself. The minimum for me to order by myself is six. That's the least GF will guarantee.

SO, if anyone else want to order chicks to bring it to six or more we can do that. I've forwarded the email to those who are interested so they can see what's available. We need to do this asap.

I do have a paypal account. PM me if you are interested.

ta, ta for now,

Rancher, one brick shy of a load, Hicks.

Well I didnt do my usual look in on the broodys this morning to see how they were. Just finished bringing fresh water and food to everyone and guess what? Eowyn has 2 blue fluffybutts under her! She was out of the nest box but on the floor next to the feeder and waterer. It was then that I saw the first chick (all dry) and when I picked her up number 2 scooted out! Ran back to the cellar to get chick feed and vita pro b for the waterer. Mom and babies are well and I dipped the chicks beaks in the waterer so they know where it is. Arwin is still sitting tight on the rest of the eggs, which I will candle tonight. I congratulated Legolas on becoming a dad again. He took it in stride. He is a really good at being a dad to all his chicks. Looks like the hatching busts of last year have turned into a boom for this year! I may have some for chickenstock next year.

Hawks were hunting overhead earlier. I am sure the pair have hungry mouths to feed as well. Not on my dime though.

Rancher--you should hire some young guns to come and help you out for a day or two. You can direct them while they do the labor. I used to make good money doing that when I was 13.

I will try to get pics of Eowyn and the babies later. Its too hot to bother them right now. I am so excited!

Sure I'll just do that with all my money. Seriously, money is tight, and I'd have to give up chickens or something else. So if I do it myself, I can have more chickens. Though I have in the past. There are labor laws and kids have to be 18 to operate a machine. A weed whacker is a machine. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'm insured for that. I have/am considering it. At least to get some help in getting it done.

Things I used to do at 13 kids can't do today.

That's what I was afraid of. *sigh* Just now, I checked in and she was off the nest...AGAIN. Except now, she's pacing back and forth in front of the door that separates the broody side with the big bird side. She's watching Attilla's chicks with quite a bit of interest. No doubt, if I put her back over, I think she'd try and steal one.

I can't win with her, apparently. Too bad her own chicks are not due for another few days.

Oh well...next time I'll know better. We were doing so well until the day before yesterday and then....DISASTER! LOL
