Any advise regarding my sneezy chick?
Hi all, my little Red Sexlink 'Ginger' is about 15 weeks now, and starting to get a little pinker in the face. My only concern with her is that she seems quite petite, and not growing very fast, still feels quite bony in the chest. They recently transitioned from starter to grower food, with occasional extras of natural yoghurt and weeds from the garden. I have just ordered some handheld digital scales with a hanging hook, so when that comes I'll be able to pop her in a bag and monitor her weight, see if she is actually growing.
Her newer companion, Silver, the Ameracauna (the replacement for the EE pullet chick who turned out to be a rooster) has been here around 10 days, she's a few weeks younger, doing that teenage molt at the moment. She is a little bigger than Ginger.
She has a nasty sneeze which seems to flare up, and then get better, however the recent really humid weather has made it noticeably worse, I'm seeing snot bubbles from her nostrils, and some gulpy post nasal drip type swallowing.
I researched on here of course, and purchased some VetRX last week, used as proposed on the label, few drops of the unheated liquid into the water, so as the oil sits on the waters surface it gives a little coating to the beak when they drink. Every night I soak kitchen paper with warm water and clear any obvious gunk from her nostrils, (she's doing a lot of wiping her beak on the ground and getting bits of food and woodchips stuck to it) I put a small amount of the VetRX in a syringe, sit that in warm water, and once its heated through put a dab under her wings and onto the skin at the nape of her neck so she will inhale it while sleeping.
Her eyes are clear, I haven't found any problem with her crop (as I've been reading about various crop problems which show up via sneezing issues), or seen any stool problems. Appetite and activity level are normal for both chicks. They are in a large pen on woodchips during the day, and mini free range on lawn within a fenced area when we can supervise them in the evenings.
I'm just wondering, as this isn't clearing up with just the VetRX if there are any other meds I can get over the counter I should try? I have apple cider vinegar with 'mother' but wasn't sure if that was OK in the water at the same time as the VetRX?
Finally these 2 who we are referring to as the 'little chicks' as opposed to the 3 adult 'big chickens' have suddenly discovered they really, really want to roost at dusk. Instead of heading back to their little coop, they have found a new perch!
Sorry quality is terrible, ancient flip phone, moving chicks and dusk are bad ingredients for a clear picture, but you get the idea - quite alarming to have chicks who are happily pecking round your feet one minute, launching straight at your face the next!!!
