NY chicken lover!!!!

You know, I always forget which color is which, and I have to go look at my males to remember! Duh. I'm thinking the females have more white and the males more rust? Of course, if you got whites, then you're out of luck on color sexing! I thought whites were a good idea, until I realized how much longer I would have to grow them out!

If you flip them over (yeah, they'll spaz!) and kinda smoosh their "private parts" the boys will reward you with foamy stuff (yeah, it is what you think it is!) I'm sure there is a more accurate desription on the Quail forum then smoosh their parts!

The girls should almost be laying, I'm finding some eggs in my one tub of jrs now. I was hoping for a nice large male to swap out the one male in my pen. Anyone got a really large male in another color to trade for a hen?

Don't feel bad on the duck eggs, I had six dozen I killed this week! I do think they were old, since some of them exploded after less than a week! I didn't crack open the rest yet, some of them looked partially developed? The broodies had a dozen under them, and either they all rotted, or someone ate their eggs when they would get up. They had two left yesterday, and today they were gone. I think the meat chickens ate them, or the Barred Rock!

I'd have to go read up on Crested Genetics, aren;t you supposed to breed Crested to non crested? Something about fatal genes or something? I wonder if your duck will cary the gene for it though? I need to go read up, I have a Crested Cayuga Drake. Can you show Crested Cayugas? Probably not, but its awfully cute. The best other Cayuga Drake is the one thats lame, of course. I can;t see anything wrong with its leg that I can tell.

I sent the ancient Buff Drake home with the people who bought the other ducks today. I've had him here for well over a month, and the girls don't like him. He never bathes, and he won't breed! They can pick one of the young drakes I guess. They bought my Runner ducks too.

I have to put down a Rex kit tomorrow though, its missing one of its hind legs, and it was doing okay, but tonight I noticed its also messed up one of its front legs. I really hate culling small fuzzy things.

Sachasmom, I had 15 of the quail that I got from you hatch so far. I am not sure if I will get any more. Not a great percentage but I am happy since it was my first time hatching quail.
I was able to get rid of my black copper rooster yesterday. Yeah!

Did you get any Bobs or just the other kind? You had what, 3 or 4 dozen? Whats that, 25%? Bleh. Of course, any time I get 25% on anything I'm doing fabulous, but I really suck at it. Can you crack the remaining eggs and see whats up? I usually give them at least a day or two before I toss them. Do you have a Quail turner or did you turn by hand?

I forget where you are, are you close enough to come pick up some more? I've just been tossing them to the chickens, if you want more I can save them for you...

So, lemme ask you guys, do you think there is a difference in viability of hatching eggs based on what the chickens/ducks/quail eat? I always see that people put vitamins in the water, does that really make a difference? I can see a difference in the chickens that free range vs the ones I have penned, only its the penned ones that almost always get picked off when they're out! They're just too expensive to be feeding the local predators, ya know?

I like the Purina feed, but I don't know that there really is any difference between that and the feed store stuff. (Well, besides the cost!)

There was 4 dozen with 4 bobs. I put them in at the same time so I wouldn't expect anything from the bobs until today or tomorrow. I used the chicken turner and it was fine except for a couple that were so small they fell through. I live in Livonia. Right now I am up to my ears in birds so I don't need any right now but may take you up on more eggs later. I had a great hatch with your chicken eggs in the spring. I am thinking that I needed to keep the humidity higher with the quail eggs. A few dried up completely and fell like they are empty? I haven't cracked any to see whats inside.
I buy my feed in Penn Yan at the organic place (I can't think of the name...Lakeview?). I am guessing it is more expensive but it is a very natural and I think high quality feed. It is cheaper than the organic feed sold at agway (and I like it better) but I am certain it is more expensive than the standard feed. During the summer my birds free range which helps to keep costs down. Assuming I don't lose to many to predators.

How much are you paying for the organic feed? I looked at Countryside Nationals, and its 25 bucks a bag, plus 18 in shipping per bag! Ouch!

I was just reading in another thread about how Land O Lakes bought out Purina and some people didn't like it as much. I did notice this batch of Flock Raiser was awfully fine/dusty. I need to do some research and figure out a formula or something...

I wonder if the eggs are too pourous, causing them to dry out easier? Not that I have any idea how to tell if my eggs are too pourous, or how to fix it if they are!

I was feeding milled feed from Pine Creek, and my husband kept getting sick from eating the eggs! :O I wasn't sure if it was the feed, or if it was the chickens digging thru the bins eating the medicated feed from the chicks. So far since I switched to Purina he hasn't been sick...

I'm thinking about ordering some Kelp and Fish Meal, do you know if that store carries them?

It is lakeview organic grain in penn yan. The last time I picked up it was $17.00 for a 50lb bag. I don't know if they carry kelp or fish meal.

Ok, NY chicken people. What is the deal with quail? Do you eat them? Can you eat thier eggs? Never known anyone who rasied them so please enlighten me. Thanks.

This is my first time raising quail. From what I read on-line I think they will be big enough to eat in 6 weeks? I hear they are very good so I plan to try them. They are small and I read that a serving is two quail. I also hear the eggs are delicious although I have never tried them.

Well I live in the middle of nowhere so I am hoping to build up my stock to offer them to the 3 places that do sushi and some of the higher end restaurants.
