First chicken related injury - rackafrackin crooked toe EE rapist roo pecked me last night, right on top of my hand, as I was reaching in to get the water dish. Broke the skin, but didn't draw blood. He got kicked pretty good, twice, when he came near the door opening again. After the second time, he hid in the Eglu doing the rooster distress song (similar to egg song). It was getting dark out, so everyone else was already roosted in the coop. Boys in there started up too with the racket. Threatened the attacker with getting tossed in the Amish hen house.
Got my hands on a few of the main flock earlier this week, not quite sure what I'm looking for, but I was expecting to feel more meat on them. They all look healthy with fluffy, shiney feathers. Have free access to the feeder and to free range through the weed patch picking leaves and bugs. I am transitioning from starter/grower to layer feed right now.
Which brings me to a feed question: The starter/grower was crumbles, the egg layer is crumbles, but I put in an order at Country Max for the new Agway Hearty Hen Layer feed. Has a slightly higher protein than the regular layer, which is my main thought with the heritage breeds, and also has the omega-3 and marigold extract. Only thing is it comes in pellet form. Since they have been on crumbles their entire little lives, has anyone had problems switching from crumbles to pellets?
