NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a duck (hen) that bosses around a red rooster. One of my boys keeps telling me that, "we are going to have chucks one day." She lost her drake in a coyote attack, and makes this red hold still so she can settle her bill in his wing every night.

Want a new drake? :D I have one I keep trying to find a new home for. You might be too far, though, depending on where you live.

Yes, I am too far. NC. She does not lay eggs. There have been more than one incident where her life was in danger, and had life threatening injuries. Never heard so much oo..ing, and ahh.. ing as I did carrying them into the vets office. They know me well now. If I did not know any better I would think 9 lives, like a cat, but no DUCK! My son helpped me pull her through. When he rubbed her face it calmed her a great deal.

I have a dog house that I was given by a friend. It is quite crude, unpainted heavy plywood. My plan was to get it home, sand, prime and paint it before my husband saw it. Unfortunately I had his truck and it was too heavy for me to get it out by myself. He was aghast at the looks of it and really did not want it in the yard. He couldn't see the possibilities it has. He drove the truck to the burn pile, and tossed it on. I think it has definite possibilities, so if anyone wants it, you can have it. I dont think it will be burned for a while. To keep the peace here I will not be using that dog house. It would be very cramped quarters for me.
if you were closer I would be right there! My beautiful wife is quite understanding thankfully

First chicken related injury - rackafrackin crooked toe EE rapist roo pecked me last night, right on top of my hand, as I was reaching in to get the water dish. Broke the skin, but didn't draw blood. He got kicked pretty good, twice, when he came near the door opening again. After the second time, he hid in the Eglu doing the rooster distress song (similar to egg song). It was getting dark out, so everyone else was already roosted in the coop. Boys in there started up too with the racket. Threatened the attacker with getting tossed in the Amish hen house.
Got my hands on a few of the main flock earlier this week, not quite sure what I'm looking for, but I was expecting to feel more meat on them. They all look healthy with fluffy, shiney feathers. Have free access to the feeder and to free range through the weed patch picking leaves and bugs. I am transitioning from starter/grower to layer feed right now.
Which brings me to a feed question: The starter/grower was crumbles, the egg layer is crumbles, but I put in an order at Country Max for the new Agway Hearty Hen Layer feed. Has a slightly higher protein than the regular layer, which is my main thought with the heritage breeds, and also has the omega-3 and marigold extract. Only thing is it comes in pellet form. Since they have been on crumbles their entire little lives, has anyone had problems switching from crumbles to pellets?

So it seems that my one poor most mature rir pullet is tired of being gang raped and is escaping the run every day. She is the most people friendly bird I have ever had. 4 of the boys did nothing but chase her all around the run this morning to mate with her. Since dh is home digging hole to finish putting in the posts to finish the run I told him to leave her out. She doesnt go far (actually follows him around the yard) and she can have some peace and quiet for a while. Boys arent quite up to weight yet otherwise freezercamp would be filling up this weekend. They are getting on my nerves with their actions. Fortunately they dont crow, only Mr. Big. Maybe by the end of the month.

Back to work for me today. Of course its going to be hot and humid today. Grrrr

We'd LOVE another. This thread really perks in the winter. Summer, it's a little slow. Of course, if you hang around you'll find yourself with more birds. We're carriers of Morehens disease (recently mutated to Morefowl Disease)

I have a terrible case of morehens disease. The chickens were hubby's idea. Now the coop is mine, dh doesn't step foot in it unless I need his help with something. We started with a purchase of 6 chicks, and now I have a flock of 22 mixed chickens (only 1 roo, I think) and now just got 18 BA chicks for breeding next year. I plan on selling 1 day old chicks along with eggs from all the chickens. Love my new hobby!

Good to know about the feed. I was hesitant, but thought they would either eat it or go hungry. As for the EE.... he is the king of crowing constantly starting at 4am, and although I haven't given him a good feel-up lately, is fairly heavy for his size. He should be tasty.
