I need some help identifying this bird that the dog caught in the yard. I think it might be a pheasant or some other game bird, but I'm clueless. Any ideas?

(The dog catching birds in the yard is frowned upon, however, she was unsupervised in her own territory so my fault.)

I think it might be some kind of grouse. There are quite a few varieties that live in North America.

Yes, looks like some breed of quail to me too. Don't be mad at the dog, it's just their instinct to hunt and this will sometimes happen. It's ok. :hugs

Interesting. We have had several pass through the property, and I've been quite curious. The beak looks like a bird of prey which threw me off
I suppose with the hunt club across the road raising and releasing them (whatever it is), I should be sure to do a good walk through the yard to be sure the dogs can't catch more

Looks like a Bobwhite quail or something similar. Things happen, no need to feel bad about it.

Bobwhite quail have small sharp beaks.
