October Hatching ... How many are in? I'm due to hatch on 10/17

was not planning to hatch, but just got some eggs at the chickenstock so I'm in yet again. Not sure where I will put all these chicks but I've cleaned out the barn!

These are mostly bantam, so they don't count, right?

I just set more egg's yesterday.Im supposed to selling all the bird's as We may be getting foreclosed on. I sold my 2 red pyle hen's and one roo yesterday. My buff columbian hen and 2 white. Then the lady came back today and bought 3 more columbian hen's one of my duckwing roo's and my golden laced cochin hen.She hopes to get the roo too for the cochin.I hatched out some nice cochin's and frizzles and 3 silkie's this week and a couple of really cute mix.No one has bought any baby chicks yet.Im hoping We can work something out to stay so even at parting with my older bird's maybe I can have some newbie's to start back up .I just found 10 hidden egg's from a couple yesterday and I put them in bator along with the already full bator of some duck egg's and bantam's.Hope I can get most of them to hatch all are due at diff. time's this month.

I'm so ..... inept.... I actually just use separate incubators for different set/hatch dates. Even so, I have to put labels on 'em. I get el cheapo Avery file folder labels and stick those to the things I'm using as bases upon which to set the 'bators in my book case and on my desk in the guest room. (I use the lids to Styrofoam cold pack shipping cubes.) The labels are long enough to write down the Set date, candle date, lockdown date and hatch date plus the KIND of eggs I'm incubating in each incubator. I had it on a paper calender on the back of the guest room door, but that got ... complicated... too complicated for me. I needed to remember WHICH eggs were in which incubator. I DO write down pertinent info on that calendar, but rely upon the Avery labels.

The first hatch of the month for me should actually be broody Shirley Welsummer on her 4-egg clutch, on Oct 5. WHOA! That's not that far away! NO WONDER she was just a bit snarkier than usual when I checked on her this afternoon!

Guess I lost count there because I knew it wouldn't be good to try to slap an Avery label on her! Toldja I was lost without those labels.

Candled my incubator at 7 days and then I just candled tonight at 10 days and have 34 out of 42 still good in my incubator due Oct 12/14. I have 3 hens out in the hen house setting First hen has 14 eggs due Oct 17/19, another one has 12 eggs due Oct 19/21 and another one has 9 eggs due Oct 20/22. I have my 2 buff silkies laying in one nest & they have 10 in the nest but not ready to sit yet so I am anxiously waiting for them to start.

Yes, Walmart has thermometer/hydrometer's that are digital and are inexpensive. It's all I use. They cost about $7 here. I have only had to change the battery once a year. They take a AAA. If you have a problem with temps acting weird all you have to do to see if it's the unit is remove the battery and put it back. If that don't work put in a new battery. If that don't work, it's not the unit. And they are small and you can lay it on top of your eggs or leave 2 empty spaces and sit it there. That is if your using a turner. (the empty spaces)

I bought a small flock of Buff Orphingtons, 7 pullets and 1 cockerel, hoping I get a broody. One of my EE's thought she wanted to sit on eggs but changed her mind. I now have her eggs in the bator. I want a broody so bad. We went to the auction to sell during the summer and somebody was welling a broody hen and her chicks. It was so cute but we where there to sell not buy and it was everything I could do to hold back. I still regret not doing it anyway. The person that bought her was very rough with her and her chicks and they put her and her chicks all in the same cage as the other chickens they bought. I bet there where some dead chicks when they got home. I just hate to see how some people treat their animals. That poor momma and babies. She must have been frantic and they scared.

I have 3 eggs I just put in my new bator. Just want to test it out before I put a whole batch of my Black Australorp eggs in. They are either Australorp RIR cross or Australorp Golden Comets cross. They should hatch on the 24th.
