Cut the sides of the egg carton down a bit. This makes it easier for the little ones to flomp out after they pop the top off the egg. The first time I used egg cartons I only cut the lid off. For a while it looked like a had a Whack-a-Mole game in my incubator because the chicks pipped, zipped, but then couldn't climb out!
I've got 5 Cream Brabanters waddling around in my incubator this morning. Two Salmon Faverolles pipped, but they haven't fully hatched yet. Today is my official hatch day, and I'm off work, so I'm going to be checking on them all day long. This will be the first hatch that I've witnessed from beginning to end. Usually then hatch at night, so I miss all the gooey wet chick part.
First off, congrats on your successful chicks!! Thanks for the pointer. I will definately trim them down. I have wondered about how hard it would be on them to crawl out. Do you usually use this method? Does it help with drowning issues or am I just giving myself false security? Some of the aircells look pretty good but some look a bit smaller than ideal compared to drawings I have seen. Also, since I have a hodgepodge of egg sizes going, I am seeing some that are completely full at this time and some that look like they need a bit more time to "cook". That makes me think that when I go into lockdown tonight, some will be hatching later.
