The term pagan is from the Latin paganus, an adjective originally meaning "rural", "rustic" or "of the country."
Having been born catholic I remember the in early days of my education the clergy insisted that anyone who was not catholic was a "pagan". Made it sound like a dirty word. That included Luthurens, Methodists and all other religions. Even to read about Astrology or Numerology or heaven forbid, Druidism or witchcraft (considered to be "Black Arts") was explained to be a "sin".
Being 60 now my spiritual education came not at the teaching of the clergy but through my own journey. Research of various cultures and their beliefs has seen common threads in many if not all of them. Since then I have learned to look inside for answers to my questions rather than blindly follow any doctrine or for that matter depend on anyone else for them.
Inspiration comes from many sources. Just as mentioned earlier in the thread having your eyes, ears, heart and mind open to it determines whether or not you will find it. JMHO.
