Spring means breeding season

Even if the weather at the moment don’t feel like spring, it is breeding season. Today we had again such a cold and wet day (6°C and raining) which we not would like to have.
With this weather it is not possible to let the green peafowl chicks out for a longer period. Inside of the heated barn they feel completely comfortable. But from tomorrow the temperature shall go up step by step.

Rainy spring day
on cold and wet days the males lost lust to display. At 6 ° C and rainy weather all were standing nearly motionless on the perches.

June month of contrasts! now you can see everything, male which are already moulting and others which are still in full courtship. Hens which are laying and other which are leading chicks. Half of our males dropped off the trains. In the pictures, two cocks are seen "Caesar" and "Fritz" which are still in full courtship. It's very good to see the bright blue wing covers they still have. For "Apollo", however, is the show for this year over. He starts moulting two weeks ago and now he uses every opportunity to take a sunbath. Due to this, the gloss has disappeared on his wing covers, which is very good to see on the picture. Our "Trixi" leads her 5 chicks and has a lot of work to take them frequently under the wings to protect them from the constant rain.

Gorgeous birds and gorgeous photos! Thank you for sharing them.

The breeding season 2016 finished today. The last chick hatched today. 4,5 months after I got the first two green peafowl chicks today now the last one for this year was coming. I’m happy that the breeding season is now over, because it is always a lot of work and sometimes a lot of trouble too. At least I can make a positive summary, because since the import in 2011 and 2012 from Thailand I never was able to get chicks from all bloodlines. This year I could successfully breed with all green birds (10 bloodlines).

This is what I found at a visit to a european breeder. 2 birds from the official Imperator studbook PMI Germany what look very shabby and not as outstanding birds. A female with lot of white feathering, very few and dull wing cover color, and complete brown back. A male of 2 years, having less than the size of a female, very short crest and also the same few coloring an the wings. It seems, that the PMI breeding Germany keeps and sells different types of imperator birds. The owner of these birds confirmes the origin of these birds from the PMI - TN program Germany, both bought from the same location. All birds look great on the website pics of the breeding farm, but if you have them really in nature ??? see the pics.
