Yes. That's exactly what I thought when I first saw these ads.

This is a big business in the city of Chicago & suburbs. The rental/lease prices are about the cost of a simple prefab coop, supplies, & chicks. Either the customer will fall in love with their hens & the seller gets more $ when they purchase their beloved pets OR the customer will end the lease & the seller gets back a free coop & chicken dinner. "Chicken consultants" also charge big $ for educational classes on caring for backyard chickens.

They have been doing this in Minneapolis for a few years. I have thought it is a great concept. Something I should horn in on.

And I would bet its a much larger percentage that keep them than return them.

I'm not sure, it would be interesting to know. Some people get chooks and aren't prepared for the poo/noise/whatever or they get complaints. I bought some fencing from a fellow who had put in a (lovely) coop and a yard, but gave it up. He had a very lush and well-maintained lawn in his backyard. He obviously liked his manicured garden and didn't want it wrecked. My backyard is now a wasteland. I prefer my animals to the well-kempt look. I have also adopted chooks who had to move because of complaints. One family's backyard fence where they'd put in their coop and yard adjoined next door's bedroom window. They were hens, but the egg song was not conducive to living there. I've got a bigger backyard and so have the people over the back. I've not had any complaints about the girls' (loud, really loud) singing.

I think it's a terrific idea for people to try it out when they aren't sure they'll be able to continue with it. Better to find out before you commit than after, and have to try to rehome them.

I must be way too much farm kid..or old timer. My idea of re-homing a chicken is sending it to freezer camp..

Some of us city-folk are wimps. Our chickens are like little feathered pets, not productive farm animals.

Every time I catch up on this thread, I go to my area CL looking for something funny to add. Nothing funny happens around here, nada, zip. Not even mildly amusing.

I like to think that I have a balance between the two. I know that chickens are a source of food; once they''re dead,I can deal with it.

BUT I also have a bloody EE girl sitting on my lap right now, hiding under my shirt sleeping (the wanna-be chick). She got an a nasty fight with one of her "sisters." Oh, yeah, I have to go fix up Elizabeak. Funny thing is though, that I don't think Beaker was fighting Reeses... eh, I think dad saw the fight in action; I'll ask him when he gets home from church

I talk tougher than I am. The hard part is the first step in processing for me...and I have a rooster named "cuddles" ..... Yep, he earned his name.... My forefathers would be disappointed, I cuddle him daily.

We had a lap rooster once. He couldn't decide whether or not he wanted to be the sweet, people loving roo that we all loved, or the terrible terror that would probably have killed a hen had we not eaten him - wait, we haven't eaten him yet, he's still in the freezer!
