Oh Craigslist, You Amuse Me So!

  We had a lap rooster once. He couldn't decide whether or not he wanted to be the sweet, people loving roo that we all loved, or the terrible terror that would probably have killed a hen had we not eaten him - wait, we haven't eaten him yet, he's still in the freezer! :barnie

Cuddles will never get eaten, once a bird gets a name it is safe.
My mum told a story of when she was a little kid. Everyone kept chickens back then. Her father insisted that the chickens were to be eaten, that there was no place for foolish sentimentality, and one of hers with a name became christmas dinner. Everyone other than her dad sat at the table with tears streaming down their faces, refusing to eat whatever-her-name-was.

I'm lucky enough to be able to go to the shops and to insulate myself from the reality of food production. If I had to, I'd get used to it, but I'm don't, and I don't want to.

Similar story:
Before I was born my parents bought a baby lamb. My siblings named it "Scamper." My dad kept telling them not to get attached. The lamb had a good life and happily jumped into the station wagon and bleated the whole ride into town to see the butcher. The meat was stored in the freezer for a couple months because my mom could not bear to cook it. Eventually it came time for a fine Sunday dinner when my mom cooked the lamb chops. My brother & sister cried & refused to eat "Scamper chops." In fact, to this day, our family still calls any type of lamb meat "Scamper." That was 1st & only time my parents tried to raise their own meat. My dad got transferred to Chicago, so my family moved. I was born & grew up in the suburbs, but I always heard the story of Scamper chops.

Guess I'm a cold hearted ogre... scamper chops sound delish to me... I like the livestock, I can even name the livestock, handle it, pet it, etc. I can also process it and cook it
