Oh Craigslist, You Amuse Me So!

My great uncle had a big scary stove like this:

In the 1970s he lived in a very poor apartment/condo in Paterson, NJ. I hated visiting there & was very, very afraid of his stove. My mom had great memories of her Grandma baking cookies there & how all the neighborhood children called her "grandma." My memories were of a big black fire-breathing stove trying to eat me. LOL

It's funny what we remember.

I can imagine that stove scaring a child, but I took one look at that photo and before even reading your post thought "that stove comes alive at night and walks about". I don't know which movie had a walking stove, but there's definitely something about that one that conjures up "creepy".

Being a bit more sensible, it's a beautiful stove. Wood stoves are still quite popular in Britain. They have these ones called AGA. I remember a forum member on another forum got this enormous thing and she spent a fortune on it (not kidding, a fortune). You can get them so they look like wood stoves, but are still connected up to gas or electricity, or you can get them actually wood-fired.

The good thing about my sister's wood stove was it doubled as a heater for the house. It'd die down overnight, but you'd shove some more wood in there and you could warm up next to it and make your morning cuppa. (it was freezing down south and out in the country where she was).
