All excited here . The new bator worked flawlessly. Lol. 7 eggs in 7 chicks out. Will try and get pics of the little ones. There is one little head peaking out in this pic.

The only thing i do is really tarp up their run - but again i dont get the weather you might up north. I generally waiti till there have been a good few frosts .... my man barn with the large fowl i dont do anything to as the barn is insulated

I'm in mid-Ohio, so a bit more moderate temps here. I don't really winterize my coops per se -- so long as they are dry and free of drafts, my larger chickens do fine. The seramas come inside for the winter :) Other than that I usually put down an extra layer of shavings for them to root around in, and that's pretty much it.

Thanks for the advice! It all really helped!

As long as mine are dry and there are no bad drafts, they do fine. Figure my d'uccle will need special accommodations this winter but everyone else should do fine, especially the grow out pen. There will be enough in there to keep reach other warm plus the heat lamps i put overhead to keep from combs getting frost bite.

It's been nearly a month now but the black silkie pullet laid me an egg!

now to put it in the incubator and see if it's fertile...

Hey Bucks!!!! Quick question this is my first year with Chickens. I have 6 EE hens at about 20 weeks when do you guys usually start to winterize your coop? I live in Lorain county closer to the lake.

west central Ohio here. We wrap our run with plastic, leaving the top uncovered. Our chickens can then use the run (15 x30) all winter. Also use the deep litter method with pine shavings. Made a water heater for their water out of a cookie tin & light bulb.....works great!
