Oh snap! I need to search quail for spring and what I need to do for them in my new coop.

do not keep quail in your coop with chickens. They are very prone to disease and chickens tend to carry things that they are immune to that the quail can get easily.

I'm looking for something easy and cheap to start with. If it does well, and I enjoy them, I would likely want more of different types. So for now, I'd like about 10. Keep the females with one male and process the extras? Is that the correct way to start? They ARE being raised in a 18"x36" enclosed cage that is in the chicken coop but 4' off the floor and not where chickens can interact with them. So I figured not any more or less likely to get germs than what I would have on me while interacting with both species....

I personally would not keep them in the same building whatsoever. I've seen to many posts of quail who are so sick they must be culled due to them being within the same vicinity of chickens. I'm building outdoor style rabbit hutches for ours. There will be 1 to 2 sq ft per bird in each cage. I have been keeping 1male to 4 or 5 females. This keeps the hens from getting over mated and the fertility up.

I also hoped to put a small hutch in the coop but apart from my cochins.I will have to think on it more and thank you Minihorse for the info. I read some info on a quail thread and asked the same question and I think I started a huge debate without meaning to.

I brood my quail with chicks after they are about 10 days old & move them to their own pens at 4-5 weeks old. I have kept them in cages right next to my chickens in the barn during the winter & never had any issues at all. I brood everything from quail & chicks to turkeys & peachicks together. The only thing I separate is waterfowl. I have coturnix, lf & bantam chicks & turkey poults all brooding together right now. I do separate the quail before they begin to lay, but have never had casualties from illness caused by cages being close to other birds.

silkiesensation I have seen quail in pens and brooder next to chickens.I really like the space they need. I still with think on it, but I had hoped to raise them for eggs and meat but on a small scale. I was looking into the same breed you have I just haven't mastered spelling it yet.lol!

coturnix are great and come in a awesome assortment of colors if you don't like the plain Pharoah.
