OK, i have to vent...

I’m all for being the kind neighbor and all, and I’m not even advocating the biblical phrase:
“If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, etc…”
But I do believe in: “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”
The single mom needs to accept the responsibility and make sure that she takes the necessary steps to stop it from happening again. May be even invite Marcus to check what she did and get his opinion on it. Instead the same thing happens again and, to add insult to injury, she even doubts Marcus on the number of chickens that were killed.

Ok, about the bit of taking the dog to the vet; I was being a tad over emotional about it. I wouldn't do it, but the thoughts would run through my mind....... Besides, I know if I ever did something like that, I would get caught.

I raised that rooster for over a year. He was very sweet, so I am almost as upset as Marcus about this.

You said there was only one chicken left. What breed? I don't have any chicks at this time, but I do have a really nice white cockerel for sale on eggbid. If he doesn't sell and if you want him let me know, his name is "Squeaker".

The point is, it's easy to say 'be neighborly" until it happens to someone or something you care about.
Being neighborly does not mean you have to suffer for someone elses irresponsibility, especially if it occurs more than once. It is absolutely not fair to put your time, care and money into something to have it destroyed on your own property by someone elses pet and not be compensated. "Oops, sorry" might be accepted the first time, but the next? Or the time after that?

I'd love to donate a chicken Marcuscarr, but all I've got to contribute is a 6 month old white silkie roo. I've discovered you can't even GIVE those things away around here. (But I love him, so I'll keep him)

It has happened to me. I have lost birds, rabbits, a duck, goats and numerous other things to other people's dogs.

I also know the value of a good relationship with your neighbor.

I have lost chickens, pets, and property because of someones negligence. It sucks and is not fair.

That said, killing the dog and reinforcing the coop have the same effect, both ways that dog will not kill anymore chickens.

Reinforcing the coop has more benefits though.
You protect your girls from future dogs and predators and you remain in good terms with your neighbor, which has it's benefits no matter what personal feelings you have towards that neighbor.

Killing the dog has the benefit of not having to spend anymore money on a coop, until the next predator comes along.

I agree that you should make your coop as strong as possible. That said, if anyone or anything comes to my home to damage me, my family, my livestock, or my possessions, i will ALWAYS defend what is mine, with whatever means necessary...
