So a child molester is going to get your child's name and school location off of a website and walk around the school asking for your child by name with no other information? Doing something like that would obviously cause people to ask questions and leave a lot of witnesses.. Odds are, they'll just snatch your kid off the street on the walk home without even knowing her name and never even heard of that math website you're talking about. Child molesters don't need a name and location to know that children go to schools.
however from the information that the teacher provided you can get a LOT of information... like the kids address... you need to know how the mind of a sexual predator works... they are intelligent as much as that pains me to say... they are very skilled at their craft...
from sally smith and a school name.... you can then narrow down the geographical area in which the child lives... you can then search the public directories and get a phone number... now my last name is NOT smith and I am the only one... so now this sicko has my childs name and address... and they also know that my child is a so -so math student... I am not dumb as a stump... so I dont fall for scams.... but lets put the shoe on another foot... and you get a phone call that goes like this...
Hi may I please speak to Mrs. Smith?...
This is her....
Hi Mrs Smith my name is pete johnson from the bogus city school board... I was given your daughter, Sally's information from Mrs neglectful teacher because she feels like I can be of some assistance. I can see from her math scores that she has a C average and we would like to help her with some of the fundamentals of math so we can hopefully bring that grade up so her passing is not at risk. I am offering to meet with your daughter twice a week after school or at a time of your convince and offer free tutoring that will be covered by the local school board.
**the parent hears free!!! and they are hooked...... because after all they called you... they know that sally is struggling in math... they said they were from the school board and know what school she goes to right... oh and they even know our address so it must be legit.... but really the thought of getting something for nothing was the real hook line and sinker..
trust me when I say sadly this happens everyday!!!! child sexual predators lure children everyday over the internet... usually there is a period of time for grooming.. meaning that the offender will gain the trust of the parents and the child by offering to come to the childs home and then suggest that maybe it would be a better idea to meet at the office because thats where all the resources are right.... and after all sallys marks on her weekly tests have improved so the extra help must be working...
I totally agree with Dar. My girls school offer whats called "wellness night" it is a night that they offer a few different 1/2 hour seminars, everything from dealing with ADD, with a specialized dr as the instructor, to healthy eating, instructed by health and nutrition experts. One of the seminars we attended was internet safety, this was being taught by a police officer, now detective that specializes soley on internet safety for children. You know, poses as a child, so the bad guy will "think" he/she is meeting a real child. Most everything he told us is what Dar described above. He showed us how just from a name a predator can track a child all the way down to the school she or he is in. Just from a name! Dar is correct, unfortunatley, when she states that these sickos are very intelligent and skilled at their craft.
I don't think you overreacted at all....I think you showed remarkable reserve in this matter. I've often found that teachers, schools, school admin., etc. feel they are above the rules and laws and operate on their own authority only. And they get by with it. Kudos to you for rocking the boat and insuring the safety of your daughter and her classmates.
And a royal "DOH!" to the idiotic teacher...and that is who is teaching our children???
I think you did an awesome job. If you don't watch out for your kids, who will? When my kids were in school, i was 'in trouble' at school all the time because I'd be going to the principal saying...no, you can't do that. But if somebody doesn't say so...they will.
I think you reacted the right way, but now that I'm thinking about it, my sons' schools posted both their real names and school information on a lunchroom site...
It seemed convenient at the time, (to pay and such) but I'm seriously rethinking it now.
