OK so I didnt over-react .pls make sure y'r kids are safe on the net

You can look at almost anything in the public library. Your state may have more specific laws. http://www.oregonpubliclibrary.org/internetpolicy.html

My children have to have a library card to use our local libraries computers. As minors, I have to sign off on that card, and there is an option as to whether I can allow them internet access. I declined that option. I thought it was illegal for people to access porn in public library computers. I'll have to check that out.

We've drifted off the subject here. While tenure is a sore spot with me, and I was originally tempted to comment on that, let's get back to the subject.

I think that we can all agree (trollers not withstanding) that Dar did not over react. I found her response to be well reasoned and justified. We all do our best to protect our flock from predators. Do our progeny deserve any less?

YOU GO GIRL!!

When dealing with public entities their worst fear is a reprimand. They can be demoted and or fired by policy so you will never hear a teacher say they broke a rule it goes on their record and stays there. The outcome is a bunch of public employees that seem out of touch or ignorant.
That being said you have to blow things out of proportion in order to get action, that is why I always went to the top and if needed I would put it in writing so the powers that be could not ignore it or blow it off. I think the OP did just fine.

Their worst fear is being lied about, is being left in the dark when people don't ask them about a problem but go over their heads so even if it something simple it turns into a real problem, is losing a job and not being able to feed their family because someone blew something out of proportion but got the satisfaction of bragging they got someone fired, is being the victim of a witch hunt, is about the size of the band wagon everyone is jumping on.

Yes I think there was over reaction on a lot of posters on this thread.

I do agree with you it could have been handled with the teacher had she said I am sorry it will be taken care of and not happen again which is basically what the superintendant said. It is when they blow you off that it becomes a bigger issue or at least with me.

If there is already tension between the superintendant and a certain teacher then some will capitalize on the moment and use that as an excuse to fire the teacher, I have witnessed that myself.

I know you are a good teacher from your posts and do not fit in the stereotype of the teacher that snubs parents but as a parent myself getting blow off is the worst thing that a teacher can do to salt a wound.

Woo-hoo I am happy you continued on to the police when the school workers blew you off.Write them up in the newspaper, and shoot an email to a tv station. They need to be put in their proper place,so they don't do this again. What arses to think it was ok to do that. Sex predators troll kid sites as kids. Atleast they did not give out home addresses!

i did go to her about it ans she said she didnt do it....then who did the boogie man?... and when yo put your head in yr read end you have left everyone else no other option but to leave you in the dark and to go over your head... if you loose your job because of your actions whats wrong with that? its call accountability. i am not bragging but if she is incapable of maintaining internet safety and she has put my child in danger along with countless others that she has taught within the last 10 years then she deserves everything she gets.. so.. who is gonna pat my back when my child becomes a sexual assault victim because there was a careless teacher who did not do her job?

Dar I'm not really even speaking of you anymore, it's all the people who responded to you instead of with a simple yes or no they had to call for blood. These people hate teachers and anything to do with education. I would love to put some parents in their place; there are a lot more people that should not have custody of their own children than there are bad teachers. I'm proud of the way you stood up for yourself and got it taken care of, but I'm disgusted with the "kill the teacher" mentality of some of these people. Will I get slapped for this? Yes, I will, and that is fine with me. But I am going to defend myself and my profession because no one else will do it, because this board is mainly anti-education, and it wasn't like this in the past. As for using the Internet is schools, we do our best to maintain safety on all parts, but whether some people like it or not, technology and that includes the Internet is the future of this country. Most districts have online services they use such as Learning.com, Fasttmath, Coolmathgames, and many other sites. A lot of our testing is done online now and that means names, and other information are online too. Can the general public just wander into the site and start shopping for a child to abuse? No, and the predators who do look for online victims generally shop in public areas such as chatrooms, social networking sites, etc. It is too easy to trace anyone on an educational website to the safety parameters that are in place to protect your children and us too. The El Paso Independent School District was hacked last year, the got a lot of personal information on the staff but were not able to access most information concerning students or parents because that has a higher degree of protection.
Those people calling for a teacher to be sued or fired, or put in jail, because they make use of an educational website need to crawl out of their hole and admit that their children probably post a lot more than their parents think online all by themselves without the aid of a teacher.
We have MAPs tests here, every student takes the math, reading, and language arts sections, they are online, the reports are online, the results are delivered online. If a parent doesn't want their student take these tests they need to move to a school district that is still in the dark ages, because they are required tests and they will be taken. If you don't trust the schools safety then pay for the program yourself and do it from home. The days of all work being done by paper and pencil are long gone, unfortunately the "Sue ask no questions" idea is now the norm among the population. With all the lawyers on tv with ads screaming Call Me!! I'll put a million dollars in your pocket too!, that is the first thing people think of. Teachers and educators are prime targets because we work with children, and nothing gets a mob up faster than for someone to scream Bad Teacher!! The news stations jump it and run with it. When the teacher is found innocent do they go back and print and publish a retraction and say Oops,, my bad, we were wrong? No, they don't, they go on to the next story not caring how many lives they just destroyed. I can't even give a crying child a hug because you are the people who will scream I was touching them inappropriately. Sad thing this world has come to.

I think the teacher is out of touch, but it really sounds like the school and school system are out of touch. If they had sensible protocols that were established and routinely followed on this, I don't think everyone would have seemed so clueless about why you were concerned. I think it's good that this is forcing them to take a look at what they're doing.

I'd be curious to know what the existing internet protocols are for that school and school system.
