Sadly, I have to put down my rooster because he attacked my landlady's small, elderly dog this morning. He started limping a couple weeks ago, probably from one of our older, larger hens who's not too keen on his overtures. It has improved a lot, barely noticeable limp at this point, and I suspect he would have made a full recovery if allowed to live. No sign of infection, but still, I worry. If we're going to kill this guy, it'd be a waste not to eat him if it's safe. Any thoughts?

Sorry about your rooster.

Once he's plucked, check his leg over for any sign of green or off color. I wouldn't hesitate to eat him if I didn't notice anything odd. I might even cut off the leg if I notice discoloration and eat the rest.

Injured is fine to eat.

Infected is where I'd draw the line, personally. I'm simply not that hungry that I'd risk it, even with well cooked meat.

But just from a little butt-kicking? Eat up
