***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I’ve been thinking about you all a lot lately, I guess it’s the whole springtime thing. I know I missed POOPS. I don’t have the heart to get more birds after losing so many favorites last fall and didn’t want to be tempted (as I know I can’t trust myself).

Coral, I want you to know the Brabanter trio are doing awesome! Both girls have been laying an egg a day since shortly after I got them. My Spitzhauben quad are also doing great. I’m debating selling their eggs on craigslist. Not to make any money but because they’re such cool breeds and uncommon enough that they can be difficult to find and I’d like for others to enjoy them, too. My Bantam Faverolles are all doing great also, as broody as Cochins. But I pick up eggs religiously because I’ve decided I get way too attached to chicks and it’s best I just don’t allow any to hatch.
My best little Serama buddy, Channing is doing just wonderful and says to wave a wing to you all for him. The dogs are closed off from the livingroom and our bedroom now so Channing gets to watch Netflix with me all the time. He’s not much bigger than the Ringneck Doves.
If any of you remember my Brown Red Cochin boy “Lillith”, he’s beautiful! I thought he was a girl right up until he crowed. I still held out hope it wasn’t really a crow. No such luck. My Dark Brahama girls are doing great also, along with my Cochins.
That's wonderful news about the Brabanters. I miss their antics. The roo used to scold me if I didn't bring treats. Regular food in the feeder was enough for the hens, but the roo always wanted something extra. He really enjoyed the tops of strawberries (the part we aren't interested in eating). He also had an affinity for watermelon. Thank you for sharing about your flock.

I finally took some pictures of the tractor and dog house I got from Todd Rogers (Johnouthouse). I've got three hens (taking a break from the free-range roos) in the tractor, and they're doing very well. I was pleased to find bone-dry nests this morning after two days with heavy rain. I've moved the tractor ahead one tractor space each day, and the girls go crazy for all the new treats they find in the grass. They are eating a lot more grass as well. I may be able to cut back on their pellet ration soon. Every egg I've taken from the nest has been spotless. When I checked last night, the girls were sleeping on the fair-weather perches, above the wire floor (just under the top of the roof). I think this arrangement works better than in my larger coops because the hens aren't tempted to sleep in the nest boxes.

The dog hose for Vesta is still on a pallet in the front yard. I'm waiting for DH to get home from his business trip. It's too heavy for me to move. I used the Kubota to take it off my truck, but it only needed to travel from the truck bed to the pallet, so I felt confident I could get it that far without mishap. I need to mow. I can't see what's on the ground any more because the grass is so tall. Thank you, Lord, for the blessings of rain and sunshine.

High school graduation is tonight. I need to figure out what to wear. I have a horrible feeling I will be crying my makeup off when those big stinkers start walking across the stage. After that, forget it! The first one that hugs me is going to start a flood.

I'll be changing jobs in August: Senior English to Middle School Art. It's going to be a rough transition, since they haven't had an art teacher in the building for several years, but it's going to be good for the students in our district.

If you have the new GQF equipment where the hatching tray is slick I would suggest that you put a paper towel or something in the bottom of it otherwise it can be too slick for them and then could end up with sprattle legs if they can't get good footing and are in the hatcher too long.
