***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I worked for the post office. When it comes to them raising prices as far as I know the only ones who have any say in it is Congress.

Bummer.... so what's the point of the comment feature then? How/who would we contact to ask not to enact this? Any way to find out how far this has gotten and how likely it is to be approved?

Wow just called to check on hubby at the Coweta auction- he said it is WAY buyer's market tonight. Adult pairs going for $2 per bird, most hatching eggs $1 per dozen, most chicks for $.75-1 each. Not good for the birds we took to sell but it makes me nervous... guess I forgot the lesson I learned when I let him go by himself last fall....
Dang, would have liked to hit that kind of jackpot.

You can contact your local Congressman, maybe contact the Letter Carrier's Union. Sad to say but while I worked for them I only heard of one time them not getting approval to raise rates.

We have nice things donated. O.e. Cornish Cochin wyandotte. Thanks everyone that is donating. All the money will be used for the Jr show. Please come support the poultry lovers of the future

That's wonderful news about the Brabanters. I miss their antics. The roo used to scold me if I didn't bring treats. Regular food in the feeder was enough for the hens, but the roo always wanted something extra. He really enjoyed the tops of strawberries (the part we aren't interested in eating). He also had an affinity for watermelon. Thank you for sharing about your flock. I finally took some pictures of the tractor and dog house I got from Todd Rogers (Johnouthouse). I've got three hens (taking a break from the free-range roos) in the tractor, and they're doing very well. I was pleased to find bone-dry nests this morning after two days with heavy rain. I've moved the tractor ahead one tractor space each day, and the girls go crazy for all the new treats they find in the grass. They are eating a lot more grass as well. I may be able to cut back on their pellet ration soon. Every egg I've taken from the nest has been spotless. When I checked last night, the girls were sleeping on the fair-weather perches, above the wire floor (just under the top of the roof). I think this arrangement works better than in my larger coops because the hens aren't tempted to sleep in the nest boxes. The dog hose for Vesta is still on a pallet in the front yard. I'm waiting for DH to get home from his business trip. It's too heavy for me to move. I used the Kubota to take it off my truck, but it only needed to travel from the truck bed to the pallet, so I felt confident I could get it that far without mishap. I need to mow. I can't see what's on the ground any more because the grass is so tall. Thank you, Lord, for the blessings of rain and sunshine. High school graduation is tonight. I need to figure out what to wear. I have a horrible feeling I will be crying my makeup off when those big stinkers start walking across the stage. After that, forget it! The first one that hugs me is going to start a flood. I'll be changing jobs in August: Senior English to Middle School Art. It's going to be a rough transition, since they haven't had an art teacher in the building for several years, but it's going to be good for the students in our district.
What a great thing you are doing for your community and students. Love the hen house.

You can do pretty well on 1 acre I would think. We only have 1/4 acre and are starting to produce most of our own food stuffs at least. Switching the poultry over to fodder has been a huge savings as we have no way to produce enough grains for feed. Now if I could get some tea plants and find a way to press sorghum for sugar, we'd be golden. Lol.

Were you able to completely switch to fodder no bagged chicken food at all?

I need to get a harvestable harvest of sorghum and an cost effective way to press it too.

A dairy animal would make me closer to self suffiicient in one way, the dairy products, but further in another way, feeding them.  But the point is mute since Gary won't go along w/ a dairy animal in town (even the small sheep / goats)

Yep, we have totally switched to fodder finally. It took some tweaking to get everything going the ay we wanted but it works well now, just need to automate it. We can have the goats but I don't have the room right now. I love goats milk cheese so I'm still pushing for a way to do it. We are setting up an aquaponic system this month with a 250 gallon tank and 100 fish. We'll see how well that works.

Wow
I am going to get things next week to start fodder for my flock. Where would be the best place to get the wheat?

Well my husband wouldn't let me get my Silkies because gas is too expense... I was a little dramatic and cried in the parking lot of Logan's lol if anyone has/knows of any Silkies for sale (minus the ones in Paden) PLEASE let me know! I'm dying to have some of those beautiful babies!
Paden outside of Okemah? Where do you live? My husband goes out that way sometimes for his work I don't know when he is going next but maybe we could do a chicken train.
