***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Mine are doing great, raising some babies for food though, and a few to replace some of the older layers. That araucana boy I had Ari has his own little harem at TonyO's place, and I am looking for a home for Little man the new little araucana male looks like he will be hanging out at Tony's place too. I wouldn't mind keeping him by three roos are just to much for my girls they all look ragged and bare backed from the roos. The dubias are thriving and the freezer is working great as a dubia house, I did just feed out the meal worms they never took off well and were just a bother.

I meant to tell you my Dubia are multiplying like crazy. I pretty much just left them alone all winter except food and water and their population exploded. The Hissers were just too big and hard shelled. I had to cut them apart for the birds so I fed them off as fast as I could. I was just this week trying to decide on a different container for the Dubia. I do have a few big fish tanks that I may be able to use, 4' and 5' tanks.

I just picked up some Blue Cuckoo (project birds) and Blue Wheaton Marans yesterday. I hope they turn out well. The Cuckoos need work on the barring but they are pretty birds. I think I am going to try and help this project along. I am going to bring some birds to Newcastle to make room for them. Too many birds too fast. Having trouble keeping up lol. I will take some pictures of these marans when they feather out a little more and show them to Jack to get his opinion. I also got a mystery maran chick for free. it has chipmunk markings so it should be interesting.
How is the wire pen? Did you figure out how to set it up? I probably am going to miss it. It would be a good tractor-type.

Mitzi, i just got the eggs for Cloverleaf, 6 under a broody and 3 in the brinsea- i only have 1 faverolle from last years hatch, the mystery illness took the others- lost a total of 17- i don't plan on expanding after this hatch, my total birds right now are 43- and guineas and ducks- my sick girl i think is sour crop, hopefully she will make it but she is weak-

love to see pics of your birds mitzi-

I haven't set it up yet. I am going to cut down the legs on one of my coops and set it up in front of that to use as a run for my Japanese Bantams. I need to build another big coop first though. So many chickens. So little time lol.

I am going to bring some blue ameracaunas to the auction on saturday but I need some help. I think one of them is a roo and one is rumpless. My question is is one of these a roo and is the one without tail feathers an ameracuana or just an EE. I really don't want to look like and idiot and say they are something they are not. Please help.

#1 rumpless

#2 Pullet?

#3 Pullet?

#4 Roo?
For Ameraucanas, I have found that looking at the feathers above their tails at this age is the best way to tell. If the feathers have rounded ends - girls. If they are narrow and taper to a point - boys. Ameraucanas are hard to tell. The comb color can be a clue too. For example; the red comb of your Splash in the last picture makes me suspect it is a Roo. I agree that #3 is a pullet and #4 a roo. I think #1 is a pullet too just by the way it holds its head. But I have been wrong before. I swear they can change their minds asbout what they are untill they decide to crow or lay.

I think I might just hold onto them until I'm sure. I just need to sell some birds to make room for the birds I got from POOPS and the 7 I bought yesterday. Plus i am still hatching more

. I might bring a couple of Buff Brahma pullets to the auction. I am also bringing Spitzhauben and LF Cochin chicks. Hope they do well.

Update on my poor hen. I gave her a warm bath and felt of the mass. It is soft and squishy and her vent looks clean,. I massaged the mass area and her vent started working in and out so I put her back in the warm water and she expelled some poop. I did not feel an egg or anything hard. Here is a picture of what it looked like after soaking in the warm bath.....

Paid the rest of my bills, bought groceries, now it's time to pick up more chickens tomorrow of course!!!! 1 week old Silkies :)
