***OKIES in the BYC III ***

i came out this morning to a sad view of the remains of my bucket garden

replanted in a tote on the porch, maybe that will keep the danged bugs away...

and donna helped revenge me..LOL!

i came to the conclusion early on, i'm not breeding for show, i am just enjoying them, so i enjoy my EE girls, and my boy that was supposed to be pure but has his legs the wrong color, most of my EE's came from Poco and they are all sweet natured- it really just depends on perspective, and on that thread, it can get a bit testy- that said- my favorite girl Trinity, 3rd generation EE and a sweet personaity the problem with chickens, everyone i see i fall in love with- the beauty of EE's is variety.. ok off my soap box looks like my girls are finally starting to lay again... got 3 eggs today
I'm in total agreement. My chickens, no matter what they are, are the best chickens of all. I love them no matter what they are, even the little finger biters. The mutts seem much hardier and adaptive.

Another newbie ? here.
I have three coops. Until today, my turkeys and guineas, as well as one duck, have been housed in one, the chickens in another, and the third was in need of repair, and setup. It is now set up, and a very good coop, for the turkeys, so they have been moved there. My minor dilemma, is this.
I have one duckling, beginning to feather, but not anywhere near being able to fly. He is the same age as the guineas, and turkeys, +/- a couple of days. I thought they were all older, but they were all hatched, about 7-10 days, before Memorial Day, making them about 6 weeks old.
The duck, is very social, and gets along well, with the guineas, AND the turkeys. Is there one, that would be more appropriate species, to house the duck with? Someone told me the chickens would be best. But, the chickens used to peck at him a bit, when they were all in one community coop, before the guineas and turkeys got feathered out enough to go to a coop. They never seemed to harm him, but he had an "Escape Hatch" or "Bat Cave" that he could hide in.
Suggestions?

Tough morning here. Our favorite little girl, Phyllis, a gray & white Polish pullet, was found dead on the floor of the coop, a short while ago. She (I say she, only because her name was Phyllis, we had never determined her gender, but THINK she's likely a girl) was the friendliest of all of our chickens. She liked to hang out near us, when she was out, and free ranging. She was always wanting to be held, and my grandson, who got here 3 weeks ago, scared of the birds, had become best buddies with her. He was giving her frequent attention, and she ate it up. The past few days, she had been a little less active. We thought she might be getting ready to lay her first egg. Yesterday, we found a TINY brown egg, on the floor of the coop, near where she liked to hang out. I thought it might be hers, until we found out that she should be laying white eggs, when she starts laying.

Well, it's been oppressively hot and humid here. The coop has tons of ventilation, and is actually cooler than the area around it. But, I suspect that the heat is what got her. She's been very healthy, and there are no signs of any problems with the other chickens. BUT, we have guineas and turkeys in separate cages, and one turkey, is also acting like he's giving up. Every other bird, seems to be thriving, and very active. So, I have the turkey separated from the rest of his flock, trying to give him water, and food, all his own, but he seems to have no interest. I expect that he won't make it through the day. But, we can hope.

It has been a very hard week. Last week we visited my Husband's dad in Mississippi. Dad is only 71 and in good psysical health but has dymensia and is now in a home. It is very hard for my Husband who hasn't had much time with him since he was 14 and moved with his Mom to Texas.

While we were in MS, our dear dog jumped the fence at DH's Aunt's house, where we were staying, and died. We are heartbroken. Louie was a wonderful dog and my shawdow. I am still looking for him every time I go to sleep, wake up and when I go from room to room and pen to pen.
sorry for your loss MJ

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have no idea what could cause that. I know I've used valbazen before for worming but I was dealing with eye worms. Nasty little things. Again, I'm sorry, I would be completely devastated if my favorite girl died :(

Thanks. She was so sweet. My grandson is pretty sad, but, it is a good life lesson, for us, to teach him with.its just very sad, to lose a favorite. We've had a few tragedies, since we started this hobby, 3 months ago. I guess some can be expected, and some are to be predicted. But, all of them are sad.

EEs and Ameraucanas are so hard to be sure on. But with three distinct row like that I'm fairly certain #1 is male. #2 I'm leaning female. #3 could go either way, really don't know. At about 8-10 weeks males typically have taller, redder, wider comb, thicker legs, and start to get color splashes (usually red and/or white) on their shoulders. Sometimes they keep me guessing until 12-15 weeks!
