Tough morning here. Our favorite little girl, Phyllis, a gray & white Polish pullet, was found dead on the floor of the coop, a short while ago. She (I say she, only because her name was Phyllis, we had never determined her gender, but THINK she's likely a girl) was the friendliest of all of our chickens. She liked to hang out near us, when she was out, and free ranging. She was always wanting to be held, and my grandson, who got here 3 weeks ago, scared of the birds, had become best buddies with her. He was giving her frequent attention, and she ate it up. The past few days, she had been a little less active. We thought she might be getting ready to lay her first egg. Yesterday, we found a TINY brown egg, on the floor of the coop, near where she liked to hang out. I thought it might be hers, until we found out that she should be laying white eggs, when she starts laying.

Well, it's been oppressively hot and humid here. The coop has tons of ventilation, and is actually cooler than the area around it. But, I suspect that the heat is what got her. She's been very healthy, and there are no signs of any problems with the other chickens. BUT, we have guineas and turkeys in separate cages, and one turkey, is also acting like he's giving up. Every other bird, seems to be thriving, and very active. So, I have the turkey separated from the rest of his flock, trying to give him water, and food, all his own, but he seems to have no interest. I expect that he won't make it through the day. But, we can hope.:(

There are no dumb questions. We all had to ask at one point.

An Ameraucana is an actual breed and can be shown at breed shows. Theres an association dedicated to the breed and a standard of perfection to breed by. They lay pretty blue eggs and have muffs (beards).

EEs (Easter Eggers) are mutts, but 99% of chicken people call them Ameraucanas. If you go to a poultry show every muffed chicken will be auctioned off as an Ameraucana, even though they're not.

Imagine the whole world acting like every large, black, short-haired dog was a purebred Labrador, and that would be similar.
this isn't entirely true.

Some EEs are 100% Ameraucana lines, but since their color (variety) is not included in the SOP, they are not considered Ameraucanas. For instance a splash Ameraucanas could come from two blue parents, but since the chicken is splash, not recognized by the SOP, then it is considered an Easter Egger. I don't necessarily agree with this use of the terminology, but that's how it was explained to me.

In my opinion, those would just be "pet quality" Ameraucanas.

Edited to fix auto correct's incorrect correction. Ameraucana, not americana.

have you wormed your flock? I suspect maybe someone got them from a new bird, 3 weeks is a common incubation/infestation time table for lots of creepy crawlies.
Very sorry to hear about your girl. Is that a common position for chickens to be in when they pass away?
All you chicken people...does this pose say anything to you about how/why she died?

I can't keep up with all this Ameraucana what is or isn't talk. I'm trying on another thread and seem to be getting more and more confused. Last I heard is both parents can be pure and produce EE offspring sometimes. How's a newbie supposed to follow that????

My grandson was the one who arrived 3 weeks ago. I'm pretty certain he didn't give her worms. We did get some new, but very healthy hens, a week ago. No sign of a worm issue. But, I can get some wormer, tomorrow.
Anything you recommend? I have Ivermectin, but that's for Cattle, hogs and dogs. Not sure if it's good for the chickies.

It has been a very hard week. Last week we visited my Husband's dad in Mississippi. Dad is only 71 and in good psysical health but has dymensia and is now in a home. It is very hard for my Husband who hasn't had much time with him since he was 14 and moved with his Mom to Texas.

While we were in MS, our dear dog jumped the fence at DH's Aunt's house, where we were staying, and died. We are heartbroken. Louie was a wonderful dog and my shawdow. I am still looking for him every time I go to sleep, wake up and when I go from room to room and pen to pen.
Im so sorry. Its heartbreaking losing loved ones. And dementia is a hard thing to watch someone go through. Im so sorry. I hope those new chicks help with the healing.
