***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have a hen that wheezes every time she breathes in and out. No discharge of the eyes or nose and no other accompanying symptoms other than maybe being slightly lethargic, although she keeps up with the others and eats/drinks just fine. It started when she became broody during the hottest days of summer - I tried to do some research and found that prolonged heat can mess up their respiratory system but there has been no real improvement and it actually seems more pronounced since the cold snap hit... Any suggestions??

Do you have any amoxicillin on hand? 250 mg gelcap once a day for two days will usually kick any respiratory issue. Dip it in water before you slip it down the throat..it slides better. You can get Amoxicillin 250 as fishmox at Walmart or many of the feed stores...runs about $20 for a bottle of 50 pills. That's a lot cheaper than getting 12 pills for $20 from the vet.
As your next line of defense, Gallimycin or Denegard mixed in drinking water. I keep both on hand. Gallimycin is a powder and Denegard is a liquid.

I pulled my sweet banty cochin roo this morning from gen pop. When I opened the coop everyone jumped out except him. He was still on the purch. He is eating and drinking good but has a runny nose. I haven't heard any wheezing. Should I treat with amox?

have you put your ear under her wing to listen to her breathing?? I'd be tempted to get her on tylan in case she has an infection

Yes. same dosage for Bantams and large fowl ...one gelcap for two days. The Bantam will be able to swallow the gelcap.

Ashtree....Oxine is an antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial. It is great as a preventative. While it may be helpful with a bird already exhibiting symptoms, it will not heal the problem. I use Oxine and keep it on hand for treating drinking water, disinfecting and treating eggs before incubation. You cannot use Oxine with other products because it will cancel out their benefits.

In a pinch, a Dayquil capsule can be used by pulling a 1/4 cc of "juice" from the gelcap and add enough water for 1 cc.  Give this to the bird orally twice  a day.  Especially helpful if the bird has a temperature.

I usually pull eggs from the egg turner and place them in the hatcher on day 18. I put them in the bottom half of a paper egg carton with holes punched in the bottom of the egg cups for air circulation. This keeps the hatching chicks from playing football with the eggs. After hatch these are discarded and not reused.

I use Oxine year round unless I'm using the drinking water to treat for worms, etc.
Oxine can be purchased by the gallon on Amazon.com and can be shipped by Fed EX.

The coat has really worked. Rudy has been out this entire time. He still doesn't like it at all, but I think if he knew it was either the coat or stuck inside he would pick the coat.
