Here in the US there has been sweeping changes in feed since the BSE outbreaks that have occured wordwide. In the UK the spread of BSE was linked to feed that contained remnants of sheep which could have carries Scrapies virus. Truth of the matter is that even now the scientific community is still not 100% clear as to where the BSE came from but to be on the safe side most feed companies have eliminated animal protiens from their feed.

Carl mentioned Alfalfa pellets which we often use to suppliment with but shy away from rabbit pellets as it is way to high in salt content. Probably the best suppliment we have used are boiled eggs, shell off for youngsters and shell on for layers. Just mash them up and we do about a 50/50 mix with starter feed.

The best home protection weapon is a shotgun loaded with heavy birdshot. Spray and pray, and the pellets won't go through drywall. That was recommended to me through several of the cops we know, so that's what we have at home. The cc is for possible away from home carry.

This doesn't include all the okra, or the arm loads of greens I took to the chickens.

I have to say I don't think I'll ever get tired of going into the yard and getting free food (sort of free anyway not counting blood, sweat, and tears and water bills

) but processing the veggies, now that's another story!!!!

I do not know if there is a supplier near you however, S&S in shawnee carries US Suppliers 20% medicated and non-medicated starter / grower that is mostly animal protien for teh base, they also carry the 15% layer that has animal Protien as well. I have this to be an excellent feed. The Best chick grower I have found yet, and the layer is very good.
If you are looking for good egg production you can use dog or cat food with Soy. Cat food is actually a bit better as it is often fish meal based with a great deal of fish oil that will put a serious shine on a bird.. The soay will actually help with egg production as will alfalfa pellets or cubes as they raise the estrogen levels.

Carl, that'd be exactly what I'm looking for. Do you happen to know what the bag reads for the 1st few ingredients? I wasn't impressed with the catfish pellets at all and (as I already knew) most the dog and cat food has corn as its 1st ingredient. I have catfood here already with chicken as the 1st ingredient and I got some canned catfood also. The chickens seemed to like it just fine but it was messy with the canned catfood mixed in. Maybe I can wet down just the dry catfood and see if they'll eat it that way. If I don't find any meat based protein food around here in the next few days I'll just run to Shawnee and get it.

Excellent links, thank you. I'm on my way to read them. The obvious always seems to escape me. Mixing eggs 50/50 with starter feed is a great idea lol! It's the perfect food for chickens plus high in protein. Why didn't I think of that?? That's what people feed them when they're sick so it must be good.

Mitzi,
The US Suppliers layer is Corn, Fish Meal, Porcine, and then animal by products, then brewers grains, brewers yeast, it is very good stuff i really like just need a little higher protien for my bantams but is outstanding for large fowl as they don't seem to do as good on higher protien above 16%.

It looks like it would've been FUN to be there. I think it'd be a blast to be able to gang up and go to auctions where the rest of you all are.
