***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Just 5 more days to the show!!!

I say breakfast at IHops and lunch at Aublies. Friends, fun and food, plus chickens!!! Going to be a fabulous day!!

So Saturday morning @ 6:00 am at IHop for breakfast, then we all head over to the Expo Center for "feathery fun" then lunch at Aublies and then back at it for more chickeny goodness.

Oh and do not worry about your birds in the cold. As long as they are out of the wind and elements they will be fine. I made all mine go into the coop. With all those warm feathery bodies it can really heat up in there. Last winter, when I opened the coop there would be steam coming out.

Also at Dollar General they are selling outlet timers for $10 and you can set it up to automatically turn off at various times after dark. It sure works good too. Have it where the light comes on at dusk and then turns off 4 hours later.

Working hard on being the laziest chicken farmer ever. Soon my goals will be realized.

Night all!

OK I am feeling much better. Not only for having her inside, but also for not being the only one who babies her chickens.

Thanks so much for admitting you baby your chickens....can we talk about chicken indulgence for a minute?

I like the oatmeal on cold mornings idea, are we talking like feed oats ? Just like boil and go? How hot is too hot?

I've just been serving warm mush made with crumbles...topped with scratch feed:lol:

My husband is already mocking my "chicken pancakes" and the chicken treat platters my daughter and I like to make and feed to them....

yes, actual pancakes with scratch feed and oats and whatever thrown right in. it started with throwing leftovers into leftover pancake batter and now we make dedicated batches...they love it and it is fun to hold while they eat it....

The chicken treat platters are more for making our leftovers and scraps look more elegant when we serve in the coop. My daughter is almost 6 and one of her favorite shows is Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee, (she has been a fan since she was 2 and it is the first non-cartoon show she liked) so plating and centerpieces and garnishes and cocktails are really necessary for just anytime around here. Making and serving things for the chickens has been a big hit all summer and we have continued the practice....anyone got any recipes? Santa is going to have to visit the coop too because she put it on her list to Santa.....any ideas there?

I'll bet'cha I can find another bird somewhere I'm thrilled with for $20 and not have to suck up

I'm not interested in breeding & showing. Mine's a whole different mindset. I'm not in birds to make money, I'm in it for a hobby. I do it because I get attached to them and want to take care of them. There's some birds I'd spend a lot of money to buy (but not $200). But I'm a lot more apt to pull a dirty filty mite-ridden mutt rooster with a broken leg out of the ditch and blow the grocery money on him. Then eat macaroni & cheese for 3 wks. Just different priorities. 'Sides, I want lots of critter company in Heaven when I get there.

You sound like me. BillyClyde (my serama) has a messed up foot. It doesnt seem to bother him much. As soon as we saw him we knew he was the one we wanted.

I'm at a loss here on your timer setting , please explain. Why would would you want to turn a light on your fowl at dusk and have it go off 4 hours later catching the birds on the ground ,in the dark ,and them not being able to see to fly up on the roost? Now if you are wanting an early hatch, and wanting to give the birds 12 or so hrs of light to trigger egg production , I can see having the lights come on 4 hrs. before daylight. Personally, trapping my birds on the ground is not a practice that I would advise anyone to do . Like I said , please explain , I sure would be interested in learning what is to be gained by doing that.
