***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hey everyone!
I like the idea of using vinegar to dissolve the shell of the eggs. When I worked in a restaurant, we put the boiled eggs straight in an ice bath and let them set for 30 minutes. That also helps keep the yoke from turning green.

Speaking of eggs, had a fried egg sandwich for dinner but was disappointed because none of the avocados were ripe.

Obviously I am spoiled, sandwich just isn't a sandwich without avocado.
Tomorrow is a half day.

Then a 3 day weekend!

Sorry did not mean to rub it in. Just so darn grateful the weekend is almost here. So what is everyone planning for their weekend?

To those of you who are experts at hatching, hopefully you'll be able to help. Tonight I discovered two Serama eggs that have internally pipped. They chicks are chirping inside the eggs and are rocking the eggs around trying to get out.

All 7 of my broody Serama hens steal eggs from each other regularly, and I'm afraid that these two chicks that are trying to hatch will be killed once they start to hatch. That's happened before with this group of hens. I made a new nest in a big plastic tub turned on it's side, and tried to get a hen to recognize and sit on these hatching eggs, but none of them were interested. I tried it with most of the hens, but they immediately went back to their old brooding area. I don't have a hatcher to place the eggs in, so I'm at a loss. Any ideas on how to help make sure these babies aren't killed by the hens? I'd like to give them a chance.

Thanks,

Deanne

Deanne,
I wish I could help but I NEVER let my hens have or hatch eggs..

Not planning.. playing it by the seat of my pants.. eveytime I make plans they get all tossed around.

I like the price on your coop way better than the link you sent lol
As far as ventilation-when I made my Silkie boys coop I got some screened vents at Lowe's for like $1.50 each. Here I took a picture for you. You can just use a saw to cut a hole a little bit smaller than the vent and screw it in, I think it even came with the screws. It keeps the rain from blowing in since the louvers are pointed down, yet still gives them ventilation.

{ ya'll did notice how i slipped the short joke n there didnt ya!}

You should go to Manhattan with me sometime.. There and LA I can drive and get there no problems, scares everyone else in the car but I always get there.. As a rule if you have to cut through traffic pick teh nicest newest car and cut them off, they stop. Never mess with the beat up 10 yr old car or taxi.. They have dents for a reason.

That reminds of an interview that Clint Eastwood was giving several years ago. The person (I don't remember who) asked him why, since he had plenty of money to spend, does he drive around in an old beat up pickup truck? His answer was that living in Cailfornia, he wouldn't dare drive a nice car.

I think if there weren't so many hens bunched up together broody-ing at the same time, it wouldn't be a problem. Getting them to change into a new nest is challenging, if not hopeless. There are a few more eggs that should start hatching in the next week or so. Once that happens, I'm going to try to break them from being broody. No more hatching - or attempting to hatch for them for awhile after that. At least not until I get moved. Then I can have them a better setup to go broody in and be more selective about which rooster gets to mate with which hens.

Guy..
You have Chicks.. By sunday there will be a bunch.. You failed to warn me they hatch early.. One labeled as AB II was already out. The KO's you will have plenty.. when moving them it was odd I could feel them moving in the egg, and most were pipped already. next time I will move yours on day 17 instead of 18.
